I've just tested our connection speed using http://http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html and usually we get a pretty stable and consistent 6.4Mb. The first result was 3.9Mb, then 6.0Mb and finally 6.3Mb. The fact that it's peak-time may have something to do with it but then I'd also try changing your micro-filters. We had a slight issue last month and I happened to have a BT ADSL MF50 filter in the house and this has solved the problem. Filters can fail. TalkTalk have sent me a replacement but thats now in the draw. The BT ones are apparently better quality though they're both made in China. The number to get another one from TalkTalk is 0870 0873 526 but you'll only get one. Saying all that it could be router settings so you could check on here http://www.talktalkmembers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=37

Yeah I've read all that, since posting I've found out that my friend is experiencing exactly the same problems as me. It seems that if we get in touch with TalkTalk they just say it is our problem one way or another - it just seems odd that after years of being on broadband and 5 months with TalkTalk my speed should be affected - it's not only my speed, it is accessing websites and at times getting online itself, you seem to be in the know so what could be affecting my speed if it is not my fault.?

Yep .. due to Mr. Rossi's advice I changed my filter and now I'm back to normal.

Hello Rock Bottom, sorry I didn't answer quicker. I'm pleased my advice helped you. I could have listed a thousand and one things that may have caused a problem but it just makes things more complicated.
If you mentioned your car problems to even a half decent mechanic they'll probably say it could be this, it could be that...but then again maybe the other...and then when you take it, it starts to behave itself. The trouble is everybodys situation and circumstance is different. We all use different phone sockets, cables, filters, routers, modems, pc's and laptops.
Another thing is we get the broadband for free up to 8Mb but I'm the same as yourself in that I want up to the 8 meg please!! The only truly solid connection is fibre optic cable from Virgin but even that can be throttled back.
Have you had the bell wires disconnected (3 and 4) from the phone sockets in your house http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php as this will stop interference from all manner of things including fridge motors, central heating pumps, flourescent lights etc. It is a bit techy but in truth it's 2 screws and 2 wires per socket. A sharp firm tug with needle nose pliers sorted ours out and I even took a picture before hand for my own peace of mind. There has been plenty posted here and elsewhere about this.
