Ideas for Tech forum sub boards. (Poll)

OK here's the thing.
There seems to be some consensus here that the, "Techie Stuff" board is getting a little too crowded. I propose splitting the board into sub boards for different categories of technical issues.
Because the board at the moment covers a vast array of technical issues, there is a chance that one or two people may have their nose put out of joint if they are not included.
I have created this thread so that everyone can vote for their favourites, and give feedback as to their veiws on what could be included.
Here are a few of my ideas, based on my experience with the board.
Firstly I should mention the fact that there is a sticky, dedicated to resolving malware issues. This and the fact that there seems to be a definate need for a board covering malware removal, and software issues.
I also believe there should be a seperate board for hardware troubleshooting and networking issues. Although these two subjects are not directly related, I do believe there is not a great enough cause, or number of posts to seperate them at the moment.
Next there should be an entertainment and multimedia board, I know a lot of people come here to ask advice about there home and in car technology.
And finally there should be a High techie board, where the boffins of the forum can hide away from the less technical amongst us, and talk about stuff that nobody else would understand or even contemplate under normal circumstances.
Anyway's, as I said these are my veiws.

Ok here's a quick break down of the last 24 hours....
There have been 70 new threads over four pages on the Techie Stuff board.
Of the catagories I have mentioned,
32 fall into the Malware/Software bracket.
21 fall into the Hardware/Networking bracket.
15 fall into the Multimedia bracket
2 post's for other, some guy on about a Mac or something......
Jk...
These figures fall exactly into line with the figures on quite a few of the other sub boards on the forum.....
Again, the figures for these catagories are of my own opinion.

Far too complicated IMO. The more you split the less busy the forum becomes unless the site is of a size which can sustain it - and this forum (Techie) could not sustain that many sub forums.
I would say if it HAD to be split - I would have a computing forum and a 'other techie stuff' forum. Note that this is splitting the board and not having sub forums.0 -
malware board where we can cut-copy-paste the same "download this, do that, read the blinking sticky"
hardware board "My pc made some magic smoke - is it broken?"
Media lounge - tv, sky, dvd, etc...
as to the high-tech ...I think most contributors here spend a lot of time elsewhere for their real tech-fix....though if you fancy helping me get another few Mhz out of my CPU you're more than welcomeUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
I don't really see much of a reason. It's not as though the Techie board is so unbelievably busy that it's hard to keep track of stuff. And we don't have any problems that creating a bunch of sub-forums would fix.
It'll just make it more time-consuming to look through all the posts, and it'll increase the work load for whatever poor mod has to spend all day moving things from one sub-forum to another.
In short, it's not broken, so there's no reason to fix it.0 -
I dont know about Mhz but, I can probably give you a few pointers on getting more Mph from a CPU.......:D

I think it would keep it clearer there might be less hijacked threads too. You could have these all encompassed by the Techie Forum:
Mac Forum
Windows Forum (possibly with a dedicated malware section)
Linux Forum (I dont think this would be used much here though)
Hardware Forum
Gaming Forum (covering consoles and pcs)
Networking Forum
Miscelleanous Forum (for things like TV problems etc)
Having said that if it aint broke dont fix it.0 -
Im not sure it would work as quite a few come on with one problem ~ say they believe their computers half knackered. And it turns out to be something simple like they have 2 resident anti virus scanners running
Or vice versa ~ they believe their infected when theyre just short of ram, or the motherboards slowing frying etc
Then youve those that simply dont know WHERE to post etc
As it stands im with Marty. Theres simply not enough posting to warrant 'sub' boards:idea:0 -
The holiday forum has been split, so I do not look at hols at home now. I used to contribute to post about hols at home but no longer. I enjoy the variety in the Tech forum, and find that I can learn quite a lot from the answers on here.

A lot of the people that use this forum wouldn't know which category their problem fitted into so I think this would just scare them off.
I'm happy to help people here but I wouldn't browse through 6 sub forums to do that, with it all in one you can see at a glance what you might be able to respond to.0 -
I'm not a fan of sub forums. Then again, the techie forum is a sub forum.
I think the last two posts from geewhiz and Fortyfoot sum up my feelings pretty well.
I agree there is quite a high turnover of posts on here. If something isn't answered quickly it's likely to drop off the first page. The oldest post at the time of writing is only about 3 hours old.
I agree the stickies could do with reviewing.0
