Which mobile phone/tariff?

My husband's just been told he's to be made redundant in a couple of months' time. God knows what we're going to do, but one of the more minor things to sort out is a mobile phone. Due to his job, he's always had a company mobile. So, we now need to sort out one for him, but I'm confused about what to go for, having read the Cheapest Mobiles article. I don't know how to calculate how much it'll be used. Mostly he uses the company one for work only, so as little use as possible is what he'd use his own for, but can't really estimate what that would be. Don't want anything fancy, don't need it to take photo's or anything like that. He'd be restricted to 02 mainly, due to poor reception where we are (we know T mobile doesn't work by us), and having seen poor reports about "3" on Watchdog wouldn't go with them either. Sorry for the rambling, but I'm still in shock at the news, and am running around like a headless chicken having panic attacks. Hope someone can offer some advise, please.

i would say stay on prepay for a while, im sure someone will be around soon to tell you the cheapest rate, purely because it is difficult to sign up to a contract no matter how low without knowing whether you can afford it or even need it, stay on payg for a month or so and if he finds he needs more than £10 or £15 per month then look into getting a cheap contract (i've seen one advertised by i think virgin for £8.50 per month)
does he have a phone he can use or will he need to get one?
are there people in your surroundinf area who can tell you what the reception is like on the various networks (another reason for testing payg before getting a contract and finding there is no reception)
    Yes Your Dukeiness :D

You could consider a cheap mobile and an Asda sim payg. Asda use Vodafone as their carrier and the call costs are only 8p per minute. This way he can see how much he uses the phone without being tied in to a contract. A decision can be made later then depending upon his use as to waht will ultimately be the best for him.

I also think that 'pay as you go' is the best bet - he might get another job soon where the company phone is provided! Good luck!

Thanks, we certainly could do with some. Have had the most dreadful couple of years, have run out of energy to cope!
  • Other option is a 30 day contract.. E.g. like these from o2, think others do it. I think they offer better value if you are makaing enough calls / txts, just depends on useage.

You would need a handset too, but can pick up cheap one for a £10...
