ALDI strawberry plants + veg plug plants

From Thursday 26th March Aldi will be selling a 6 pack of strawberry plants for £2.99 and according to the website they are "4 varieties to give a harvest spread throughout the season"

http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/58_9241.htm

They will also have packs of vegetable plug plants for £1.99:

6 plug pack – Choose from: Alicante Tomato, Cherry Tomato, Capsicum Pepper or Chilli Cayenne Pepper

15 plug pack – Choose from: Pointed Cabbage, Summer Revito Cauliflower, Iceberg Lettuce or Rosso Lettuce

Not sure if these are good varieties but prices seem good??

Thanks for the tip off - I'm not a regular ALDI shopper but became a LIDL fan after seeing a similar tip off on here so I'll give it a go! I've been looking for some strawberry plants and the fact that they sound like different varieties that will crop at different times is a bonus!

  • Thanks for that, I'll have a look at the veggie ones. I love seeds & I've planted lots - but - I've also lost lots this year as my hands are rubbish does anyone have any tips please? The ones that have come up are in clumps as I can't shake them out like I used too. Some hit the deck before I even got them near the seed tray!

    Thanks for posting this :)

I'm trying to encourage my son to grow something he'll eat and strawberries are what he's asked for. I'll make a trip to Aldi for him on Thursday... he'll be made up :)

The ones we bought from Lidl 2 years ago didnt do so well.
They didn't produce much fruit, and they are now on their last legs. We haven't even have any decent runners from them. Will be in Aldis Monday for a look though. Thanks.

MouseyMousey Do you have anyone else who could do the seed shaking for you? if not, or if you'd rather not ask then what about pouring the whole seed packet into a cup or sieve to sprinkle? or make a mix of seeds and soil, give it a good stir/shake then spread on the pot and cover with a thin layer of soil without seeds in?

It depends on what your specific problems are but I quite like the soil and seed mix one with very small seeds, Sorts out the clumps for me and I have healthy hands.

Is it too early to buy some of the strawberry plants? Would i keep them inside on a window sill till it gets warmer?

Get them into the ground as soon as you can. The crowns need to be in now to establish if you want fruit this year. Pay attention to the slugs as they love fresh green growth and can eat the entire plant away overnight!

Thanks RhinoSimon, I was thinking about having them in a pot/trough of some sort or even a hanging basket as my garden is small and although I have put manure in, its not very good quality - too much clay! Do you think that would be okay or is the ground better?

    Thanks RhinoSimon,

I wouldn't of known to get them out this early. I bought some for my son from Aldi this morning so I'll get them into pots asap. Won't they be ruined by the cold this w/e though? I'm sure theres some pretty lousy weather forecast

I bought some of the chillis this morning.

They looked in good condition, as did the other varieties available.

    I hope they do well.
    Looking forward to the future.
