It should be in the company handbook regarding staff searches and it can include cars if they’re on the company premise for the person that asked.

Where I work they only search bags not people...consquently during my time working nights at another branch I witnessed numerous ocassions of staff stealing bottles of sprits by tucking them down their jeans.

Our company has a security memo every week detailing incidents and you'd be surprised how many staff are sacked for collusion or 'grazing'. Even managers have been sacked for taking food without paying for it.

Having worked security for a small time in food - retail - I can sadly say that I have put around a dozen employees out of a job for stealing, it was quite a shock to me when I first started how much suspicion was placed on employees but I realised eventually that they probably steal as much as the shoplifters do.

If you want to stop them searching your car, hand over the keys and smile, then when they open the boot have a Tarantula or Anaconda in there or something, you take your 'pets' with you everywhere right?

This is something coming in at my work now. I don't have a problem with being searched, but there is going to be something strange about people going through my bags, coat, etc :(

When I worked at Macmarket (remember them?) some years ago there was a manager there who always seemed to take a peculiar delight in the humiliating staff searches in the till area as we left at the end of the day.

Guess who got sacked after being caught on the security cameras loading boxes of groceries into his car after the shop had closed?

As a post script I met him working on a till at Superdrug some months later and the look of stark terror on his face when he recognised me was most rewarding. He was probably worrying about me picking up the phone and telling what I knew for quite some time - I didn't.
