Staff Searches at work

My suggestion (and it's not clear - sorry) was for all - or as many as are fed up - to write - not just one employee sticking his/her head above the parapet, as it were. If MOST/ALL of the store staff write they might well realise that where the searches are taking place is not acceptable.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily Dickinson

I would be extremely surprised if it is acceptable for a member of management to actually undertake searches of this nature. This is a very intrusive aspect of security and would almost certainly be covered under the regulations governing the SIA. If the manager does not have an SIA licence, then I would consider questioning this method of shop security.
As for it being done in public that is extremely poor management and should be addressed. Don't let this issue carry on unchallenged.
Does the SIA extend to employers checking their own staff though?

I would be surprised if this topic was covered by the SIA. Staff/employee searches are very common in retail warehousing when the goods have a black market value, think leather goods, ipods, mobile phones, trainers etc. Correct prodecure would be for a private room, recording camera, a minimum of 2 people (usually a work colleague and the security person) etc. All this procedure should be in the company HR handbook. I'm sure that there will be other posters that have more knowledge re the situation in superstores etc. But I would have thought that superstores/shops would have more stock loss due to shoplifters than from their staff.0

A lot of places search now but it is wrong to search in public view.I am sure there is a 'personal rights' issue on getting searched by management in front of the public. There should also be a third party there when they do this.0 -
a friend of mine has just been told that their managers will also be allowed to search their vehicles if they are in the store car park!
Any view on this?A banker is someone who lends you an umbrella when the sun is shining, and who asks for it back when it start to rain.0 -
As Eamon correctly states, Companies that carry high value stock usually do Staff Searches.
I used to be a Personnel Manager for such a company and we did random searches on staff.
However, there does have to be a company policy in place for this and has to be done in a private place with 2 members of staff present. If a female staff member is being searched, it has to be carried out by another female staff member.
My advise would be to ask to see the Company Policy on Staff Searches. I would then launch a Grievance regarding the handling of the situation.0 -
ive worked in areas with random searches but never every day0

This is right, your car can be searched, we are not allowed to carry our car keys on us whilst 'clocked' in at work, and everyone is advised of this at induction.callansdad wrote: »a friend of mine has just been told that their managers will also be allowed to search their vehicles if they are in the store car park!
