Staff Searches at work

Well you work in a shop - are you a member of USDAW?
Do you have a staff rep? BTW Private searches are all very well but they should not be 1 on 1 - it's their word against yours.
Perhaps a carefully worded letter to store management and carbon copy to (ie print off a spare) Head Office
'We, the undersigned employees of your company at store number 255 understand and accept that it is company policy to search employees as a matter of security. We are concerned, however, that these searches are being carried out in public areas whilst the store is open and in full view of customers. We would respectfully request that such searches are carried out away from the sales floor.'

Bag search and/or empty your pockets?
Its done by a member of management as we dont have a security officer. Its pouring out your bags pulling out your pockets and then a scan down with one of them hand held scan things like they use in airports09 Wins= 5 Rugby balls, 3 Football. A cricket ball. 6 Books. This sort of searching was commonplace when I did some work for a well know toy retailer back in the day. Totally demoralising, in full view of the public and the rest of a large retail park, through a large well-lit window.
Shouldn't be allowed. I'd say Valli's suggestion of a cautiously worded letter is a good idea, but I know how touchy some employers can be about making noise. It's up to you...Russia is HERE0 -
I would be extremely surprised if it is acceptable for a member of management to actually undertake searches of this nature. This is a very intrusive aspect of security and would almost certainly be covered under the regulations governing the SIA. If the manager does not have an SIA licence, then I would consider questioning this method of shop security.
As for it being done in public that is extremely poor management and should be addressed. Don't let this issue carry on unchallenged.0 -

No different to an airport search, conducted in front of 100s of others then?

I agree with this.
It might be worth speaking to the SIA about this.
I would have at least thought to use these searching tools one must be displaying the SIA badge. It is an inprisonable offence IIRC to operate security without being SIA accredited AND displaying the badge.
( I am a SIA badge holder) Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
