shop takes 10% of refund?

Options
hello all,
yesterday i bought a keyboard at £350. i took it home & realized i didn't want it any more, so i took it back to the shop around 2 hours later & asked for a refund. the shop said they don't normally do refunds but said they would but they'd keep 10% due to inconvenience. that was £35 for the keyboard being out the shop for 2 hours. i was pretty upset by this but it was the only way of getting a refund.

is this legal?

    Yes, it's perfectly legal.

You are not entitled to a refund unless the product is faulty. In this case, it was just because you didn't want it.

It was very nice of them to give you a refund...

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

cheers for the reply. an easy £35 for them alright  . seems pretty harsh. i could understand if someone had tried to buy the item, but they hadn't.
    ah well..

You should have just kept the keyboard! Why the sudden change of heart 2 hours later? I've had keyboards/pianos, so it's not the sort of thing you normally impulse buy!

it was actually an impulse buy lol, i'd just sold the older version of the keyboard & it just so happened i this new improved version had just come out so i got excited & dived in. when i got home i realised it was just gonna sit like my other one did. i can't justify that

You put the shop to a lot of hassle to repack the item and check it was in working order etc. £35 is reasonable.

hi mark, not really, literally in/ out the box & checked in about 3 mins.. no hassle. would have been happy to pay at most £10 for the inconvenience but £35 is a full day's wages

Sure. But from the shop's point of view they don't *know* that. They'd probably want to take it out and check everything to make sure you hadn't taken it back because you'd spilt water on it, or something. Stuff like that happens!

And if £35 is a full days wages then I'd say you have better things to spend your money on than £350 keyboards ;)

See it from the shop's perspective - its not their fault you changed your mind.

..and you'll certainly think twice about buying on impulse again - really, they were doing you a favour ;)

The best advice of course is if possible to buy online. Then at least you have 7 days to think about it.

I admit I've done that with a mobile phone before, thought on impulse to spend £500 on the latest model and regretted it straight away so sent it back unopened. Thankfully most companies online are good about that sort of thing.

I even send a tumble dryer back to Comet after I'd used it, because I really didn't like the way it worked. Which I think is fair enough, the DSR are designed to give you enough time to asses the product and how it works.
