HELP albertross. my SSID broadcasting is disabled and netstumbler is still picking it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am using netstumbler on the laptop connected to the network though. Is this normal ??????
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????
  • If you have just changed it, did you click apply?

if you have told Windows about your SSID, it will remember it, and as a result show it in available wireless networks, but the neighbours shouldn't see it.

If I remember correctly, Netstumbler doesn't use this info in scans, and only shows networks broadcasting SSID. To test properly, delete your wireless connections details on the laptop (after making a note of them), and rescan. That should simulate what the neighbours can see.

Either way, WPA-PSK encryption is the way to go if you want to make it secure. The SSID can be picked up with various Linux scanners...
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

I had told the laptop my SSID when first set the network up and then disabled its broadcasting. Seems to be stuck in the lappy's memory then. The other weired think that I've noticed is although I set my router's encryption to WPA, the security is showing as WEP on the stumbler for some bizarre reason.

  • I'd double check that it is disabled on the router. Netstumbler can't differentiate between wep and wpa, it just sees it as encrypted, so that is nothing to worry about.
