I have a separate cashminder account for the monthly amounts that are not used that month, i.e. MOT, Car Tax, Oil, etc.
I also put the money for groceries, clothing and holidays in there so that it's not in our main account and, as and when I spend money from the main account, I transfer the amounts back from the separate account. That way I'm always aware of how much I spend on items and every penny can be accounted for. The way I see it, if the OR does decide to ask about any extra savings I have at any point, I can say that this is what was agreed in the budget and I keep it separate so that I can control my finances better.
I have a very simple spreadsheet where I list all the amounts I put in and take out of this account. It's time consuming, but at least I have an accurate picture of my finances at any point in time.
Hope this helps and good luck!0 -
Phil - that'll be why, I thought it was the yorkshire bank saver rather than the yorkshire building society saver! I will apply now

Mich - thanks very much for the tip!
Cheers

Well it appears I have managed to get both Sainsbury's and YBS savings accounts while undischarged. The Sainsbury's pack came a few days ago and online access is all showing everything is fine, and YBS is working fine too.
So for now I'll just use the YBS one as that is safe (and I like being able to deposit money into it using my debit card too, useful as I don't have online banking with my Barclays account at the mo because of my BR) and when I'm discharged I'll have the option of the Sainsbury's one should I need a second account.
Thanks for the advice everyone!BR 08/04/09 | ED 02/10/09

i cant see why the OR would object, infact it seems like a very sensible idea indeed. Putting aside money for car tax/car expenses or even the money allowed for a low cost uk holiday. Surely this would prove that you are managing your limited finances and not relying on credit (yes i know we cant get it but you know what i mean)0

So far the 2 Co-op cashminder accounts and savings account I opened before I went BR seem to still all be working - not just the main one I have money into - so fingers crossed I still get to keep all three to help me manage my money easily.

Theres no need to tell him what accounts you've opened post BR unless asked for it0
