There will be more than 1 Vin number on the car i suspect. Probably one in window and one on the chassis. I buy cars from Copart and had the same issue. The plate of the car was missing, but there was one under the window screen, so i had no issues MOTing. The car is perfectly legal to drive once MOTd if its a CAT D and legal on a cat C once you have had a VIC check. You dont say what catogry it is. Just look on the web where the vin number should be. I'm sure ull be fine once you find that. If its from copart i bet you got a bargin anyway, so all should work out fine.

It looks if you are the person that knows the subject. After I've collected my car I had a DVLA check done in order to establish its identity. As the car was unrecorded, cat. X, I didn't have to do VIC at VOSA. The bloke at DVLA couldn't establish my cars id. as chassis VIN was removed, the side pannel VIN was fake and the VIN under the windscreen was correct but damaged.
The guys at my local BMW's wrote me a letter confirming correct VIN and I had to go back and show it to the guy at DVLA. After a week I've received my V5. It took me another 3 months to order 2 new VIN labels from my local BMW's as I had to get a letter from 'Copart ' explaining my cars story.

At this point in time my car has two correct VIN labels but is missing the one on the chassis. The place where the VIN no. used to be got rusty so should I have it resprayed or leave it as it is? Also did you have any problems with finding buyers for your cars? I am concern that no one will be prepared to buy it when I'll decide to sell.
    Thanks.

TREE all spring to mind... Why bother buying a car with a background like thins? Unless you intend to run it into the ground. Or run int oa tree like the previous owner...
  • Might have to go for a Q plate. If the cars identity cannot be verified.

Maybe the vehicle had the details removed to stop it being put back on the road?

I know the salvage auction have breakers sections only registered breakers can buy these but some have been known to sell these vehicles on.

If it has 1 visible VIN plate, MOT shouldnt be an issue.

Will BMW not replace the plate for you. I brought a Cat D last year for the misses and its Vin plate on the inside wing was damaged in the crash. Repaired the car and got a new plate from Peugeot - charge £2 + vat for a new VIN plate. I had to prove the ID of the car etc, but then they got one ran up for me - Bargin if i do say so.

ANd it passed the MOT prior to the plate as the MOT guy used the VIN number from the dash board / under the windowscreen.

Ive never had an issue selling the cars on.. Simply becuase they are so cheap to buy from the auction, that ive always sold them on cheap.

I think you'll be fine. And the other point of view is that car was for sale becuase it was crashed / stolen etc. THe chances are the owner didnt want to sell the car, it just got written off - So its not like a lot these cars on ebay / the local paper where the owner wants rid becuase he knows about issues that will cost him money in a few months etc, and he wants shut while they becuase too obvious.

    Good luck
  • People will also buy accident damaged cars that look like an easy repair then spot something more major or find out that it will need to be SVA tested.
They will spot them slight ripples in the floorpan & chassis rails & botched repairs even if you can not.

when i bought a corsa damaged a few years back now, the vin plate was missing from the front slam pannel, i phoned vauxhall who said theyd be happy to make a new one for me, providing i can prove the car wasnt nicked so had to involve police and insurance company
they did it for free as i used this dealer all the time
    it can be done.

There is nothing hard about having a VIN restamped. Lots of different bodyshops can do it, or you can buy a set of punches and do it yourself. Nothing to it. Kit car owners have to do this to get their car past the SVA inspection.

You have to have a VIN though, as without it your car will not pass an MOT.

Do you know any that could do it for me in the South East . I 've sked around and no one wants to do it. I have all the paper work, MOT, the car is legal.

Get yourself one of these and do it yourself:

As steveo3002 said over 2 months ago - you won't find anyone except the BMW factory who can produce the authentic style, so you may as well bodge it.
