Car chassis, VIN number restamping...
Options
I've bought a car from the online auction classified as stolen and recovered by the insurance company. My new car BMW 1 series came with the completed paper work, V5 and VAT recipt. Unfortunatelly the VIN number on the chasis was removed and I'm having a major difficulty with finding the body shop willing to restamp it. My local BMW dealership can't help and advised me to have it done in a body shop. The local DVLA centre claims the chassis should be restamped only by BMW dealership as the numbers must look authentic. I find it all very frustrating. Can you help?

I personally wouldnt bother having it stamped in. At the time when you come to sell it tell them the story behind it. Tho I don't think you've been given the full story as a stolen/recovered car won't have had the shell replaced for no reason...0

I think you will struggle. As once its been removed it can be tricky to identify a car correctly. I would guess the BMW guys don't wanna know because they are worried about giving a car a false identity.
Hope you get it sorted and hope you didn't pay very much for it.0 -
Local DVLA are right, if the chassis number is known then the manufacturer can re-stamped the correct chassis no on the vehicle.
Maybe try higher up at BMW, other than local dealership?

Might be a legit car but it may put potential buyers off.
OP, see if you can get BMW to speak to your local DVLA to confirm its ok to do.0 -
the dealers wont have the factory style stamps to do a convincing job
sinse you have nothing to hide , have the number stamped onto a plate and attach it in the area where it should be , anyone that asks tell them the truth that its a stolen recovered
we have re shelled a few cars where i work , the new shell comes with no number and we send em out like it...a badly stamped shell would look very suspect0 -
I wouldnt bother. I cant see anyone wanting to touch this. Why would they?0

Dealers wont even have the kit to restamp it.

Thank you for the replays. I know I shouldn't have bought it in the first place but I can't turn the clock back. I bought the car from 'Copart' one of the bigest salvagers in the country. From my experience the car should be broken into parts and not sold as unrecorded. My problem is that the car run out of MOT and I don't know if I can get a new one.0

In that case the car should never see the road again.0

There will be more than 1 Vin number on the car i suspect. Probably one in window and one on the chassis. I buy cars from Copart and had the same issue. The plate of the car was missing, but there was one under the window screen, so i had no issues MOTing. The car is perfectly legal to drive once MOTd if its a CAT D and legal on a cat C once you have had a VIC check. You dont say what catogry it is. Just look on the web where the vin number should be. I'm sure ull be fine once you find that. If its from copart i bet you got a bargin anyway, so all should work out fine.0
