Hi Mike22 We're estimating what the percent change in inflation will be from March08 to March09.

    CPI: 1.3%
    RPI: -0.4%

EDIT: decided my initial estimate of 0.8% for CPI was too low. The above is still 'sticking my neck out' compared to others' estimates.

Does anybody know how a negative RPI would affect student loan repayments? RPI is the basis for interest on these loans....

We don't know yet. Of course the rules state that the interest should go negative but more than likely they will set it at 0%.

According to some of the Sunday broadsheets, you'd be getting extra money!

I think i have some ns and i rpi linked stuff which is probably useless..
Unfortunately you are paying for those who live on the "never never"

If you are talking about Index Linked Savings Certs. for example you'll still be getting the % interest + a fixed 0 of RPI (it can never drop below zero even when RPI does).

So for example if you took out an Index Linked Savings Cert last year at 1.35% + RPI, then if RPI falls to -1% this week, you'll still be getting 1.35% on the certificate.

Radio 4's Moneybox had an article on all the RPI linked products (benefits, pensions, NSI Certificates) and Student Loans was the only one they couldn't give a definite answer to. Apparently the powers-that-be will be giving an answer "at the appropriate time" (IIRC).
