Virginmedia direct debit setup charge

If you have signed a new contract with virginmedia recently please read the below.
I setup a recent account with virginmedia my debit card details /bank details taken but after a couple of months I received a big bill with a late payment charge of £10 .
I was puzzled by this as the direct debit should have been set up. I have been with virginmedia before and went through an identical setup process but had none of this.
When I called them apparently the direct debit was not setup. They agreed to wave the £10 late payment charge but in my relief that I had got the refund for my supposed late payment they charged me £5 to set up my direct debit.
I would suggest all new customers to virginmedia make sure you call them up within a week of joining or before your first bill arrives and tell them you want to make sure your direct debit has been setup. If they say no and want to charge you than offer to set the direct debit up yourself. take their banks details and call your bank.
