You should be able to get most wireless cards working with Ubuntu/other modern linux distros. You can then access the internet via a router. If you want file/printer sharing with the windows xp machine then you can use SAMBA, there should be tutorials on the ubuntu site with instructions on using it.

If you have a high speed internet connection and a CD burner, you can always download Ubuntu yourself and burn it to a cd.
  • For a beginner I would recommend SLAX, PCLinuxOS, Kanotix or Knoppix in preference to Ubuntu.

There are many distributions geared towards the less experienced computer user; Ubuntu is just one of the more popular ones at present.

Linux must be the ultimate MSE operating system ..... free :money: and it works

Maybe a stickie could be done on the options and flavours of using Linux -

running from a live CD to get a taste of Linux -
Installing Linux to run alongside windows -
Running only Linux on (older) PC's and laptops.

I agree, so many people have horrible times with XP, and dont do anyhting about as they are not aware of the alternatives!

As martin would put it the real choice is XP or linux and £70 in your pocket.
