Hi, in my veg box tonight I received a sort of leek type vegetable. It has a more bulbous end than a regular leek and has pinky red streaks through it. The top has been cut off so there is only the white and light green part and there was only one of them. Anyone know what variety this is? Or is it even a leek?
Any ideas for what I should make with it as there is not that much of it. Thanks.

They might be spring leeks:-
From this page, which has recipes too...

It doesn't sound like anything else I can think of. Have you tried tasting a small bit of it?

If it is fennel, I have no idea what to do with it other than swap it with a more adventurous neighbour

Do they have an internet site? some of the organic box deliverers web sites have lists of their current veg boxes, and it would be included in the list!!!!0

was thinking Swiss Chard at first, but that doesn't taste oniony. then thought one of those red spring onions, but if it's the size of a leek, it would be 'bulbier' I think, more like a regular red onion with the stem on. maybe it's some sort of oriental oniony thing? or a red version of an American Green Onion? (if such a thing exists
)
anyway, I'm intrigued, can't wait to find out what it is0 -

I was thinking chard as well but there are several sorts of chinese leeks/ onions that might fill the bill“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”
