OK your BIOS is a little different.

So where you have memory frequency = By SPD change this to 'manual'

Once you've done this you ought to be able to change the memory frequency manually (where it currently says 'resulting frequency') and set this to 166MHz, report back if this does the trick.

What CPU do you have? Is it an Athlon XP2600+ ?

    Hi

Ive changed it to 166MHz but its still crashing. Ive got an Athlon XP2400+

It can crash at any time and will often crash when im online, i'll get that box saying 'internet explorer has encountered an error and needs to close' and when i click 'ok' the pc crashes. A minute ago when i switched my pc on it got to windows and then kept giving me 'the system had recovered from a serious error' boxes and everytime i close one a new one would pop up.

    ???

    ???

    Right click on My Computer
    Select Properties
    Select the Advanced Tab
    Select Startup & Recovery Settings
    Untick Automatically Restart
    Now reboot

Next time your PC crashes you will get a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)

Near the top will be a report about the error, for example PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

Please report back this error message

    PS your CPU settings are correct, XP2400+ is a 2.0GHZ processor, 133MHz x 15 = 1.995GHZ = OK

BSOD?! Ok... I will assume you know what youre doing and arnt some internet nutter out to wreak havok on unsuspecting users pcs ;-)

Incidently, I currently have the new ram in. Should i be persevering with that ram or putting the old stuff back in and trying to get back to square one? Will the new ram ever work properly if my mobo is fussy?

I ran memtest (?) today for 8 hours and got 1500% with no errors. Strangely my pc didnt crash at all during this time even tho i opened some memory hungry apps to test. But, when i stopped memtest, after an hour the pc crashed!
Do you mean the version of memtest that runs under windows?

That's the risk you take when accepting free advice; philanthropic IT expert or psycopathic hacker? Only time will tell....;)

Yes only the new 1GB ram should be installed

    Hi AirCooled

The BSOD now has control of my pc! The error message reads as follows:

    A problem has been detected...
If this is the first time then restart pc...
Check you have enough disk space...
    Check for BIOS updates...
    Technical Info: *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x80590CD1, 0xB18D4BB01, 0x00000000)
    Dumping physical memory...

When i restarted my pc i got a very similar message with slightly different numbers.

What next...? Im getting withdrawal symptoms from lack of ebay, not sure how much longer I can cope without buying something online, will be in a collapsed heap by weekend :-D

Further towards the top of the screen you should see a message with a format like xxxx_xxxx_xxxx

    For example:

    PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

    KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Do you have something like this?
