margaretclare hi and welcome :T Agree with what you're saying but I don't see the advice changing anytime soon.. two words.. American agribusiness.

welcome back avstar :T fellow blogger :D

sheila54.. LoSalt is a salt substitute which contains potassium. It's not advised for people with diabetes because we often have a prob metabolising potassium, but it might up your potassium levels.. the thought just came to me.

    Hi Edwardia!

Yes I suppose my way of eating is a hydrid of low carb & clean eating...so does allow me sweet potatoes (in moderation though, maybe 2 a week), and also oats (but not in processed cereals or muesli, got to be home-made).

So I don't fall into the strictly low carb category, but my overriding thought is that sugar is bad, whether its carbs, table sugar or honey, that spike in your blood sugar needs to be avoided.

Also avoid chemical Frankenstein processed foods, if it wasn't around in your great grandmothers time, they you shouldn't be eating it. This means I avoid all those low carb substitutes like pretend sugar...they don't work for me and they don't re-educate your tastebuds to appreciate natural flavours.

Surely no-one is advocating rice cakes on this thread? They're horrendous never mind tasteless. Very high GI that will spike your blood sugar so you can crash & burn half an hour later, avoid at all costs!

There's a mix of people on this thread now avstar, including three with diabetes including me, a couple of people with ME, another with asthma and quite a lot of dieters. Plus there's one ex-low carber who drops in and a Dukan dieter.

I'm writing this without referring back through the pages so if I've forgotten any major health problems which low carbing helps, please accept my apologies !

Personally, I have been low carbing since 2010 but I now only allow myself a theoretical max of 50g carbs a day. In practice the only daily carbs I get are from veg, milk and other dairy produce with the occasional snack of fruit and Lindt Excellence 90% chocolate.

Don't do additives, bread, pasta, rice, cakes, biscuits etc myself. Nor do I do sweeteners or sugar or soft drinks - the only sugar in my diet apart from naturally occurring ones in fruit and dairy is the chocolate.

Dairy produce is processed, and I eat prosciutto di Parma as that's the only additive free ham I've been able to find so with the chocolate those are the only processed foods I eat now. I eat some additive-free tinned and frozen food such as Spanish white asparagus, sardines in olive oil and organic leaf spinach, however.

Trying to go organic, which is really difficult, even in a town of 50,000 people with 5 supermarkets and at least 6 large chain convenience stores.

Hope you stick around because it would be great to have another person to stick up for properly low carb :D:T

nuttybabe - I'm wondering whether the sizes have been changed by manufacturers so if you're really a 12 you can fit it a 10 and if you're really a 14 you can fit in a 12 etc.. that would mean I was really a size 24 and now I'm really an 18 :( But it sez 16 on my trousers, I bought them on 3rd June and my OH complained last night that they are too baggy and don't show off my bum :::::::faints::::::::::::::: well done on the weight loss and I hope you have a fab holiday !!

B - two boiled free range eggs
L - Prosciutto di crudo and pimento-stuffed olive salad includes diced organic carrots, diced cucumber, HG salad leaves, walnuts, cashew nuts, pumpkin seeds and HM French dressing
Snack - Half a punnet of Kentish strawberries with creme fraiche and er most of a 100g bar Lindt Excellence 90% cocoa chocolate.. cr*p weather
D - Roast new season English lamb on a bed of fennel, leeks, organic carrots and organic shallots with rosemary and HG bay leaf, chives and mint

hello everyone, I have been popping back on this thread to start picking up tips in preparation for low carbing again so thought I would say hello :)

I am currently on a vlcd (I know lots of people will frown on this but I started it for current health problems) and I am now planning for life after the vlcd.

I want to be able to low carb but keep the fat content down (have problems digesting fat) so I am looking at reintroducing meat into my diet eg fish and maybe some other lean meats.

has anyone got any tips or thoughts on how I can achieve any of this?

I'd love to go organic too, but it's just way out of my price range unfortunately. I do when I see special offers etc but in general I eat just normal veggies.
I'm eating quite a lot of protein at them moment as going to the gym 5 times a week to tone up. Lots meat, eggs, cottage cheese.

The gym & lowcarbing combined is making a massive difference to my shape. It can be hard to do cardio work (treadmill etc) as low-carbing means you don't have the quick easy-release sugars for energy, my body's got to break down fat for energy. :T

So doing low carb & high intensity short workouts is getting fab results!

Turkey breast & chicken breast are choc full of protein and v low fat, I find those cuts of meat can get v boring after a while so stock up on spices, chilli etc and do curries, stirfries etc x

thats what i thought but it could be that my old stuff is from new look and trendy shops and my new stuff is from asda! :rotfl: i tend to buy clothes from charity shops as well which are not 'hip young people' brands. so that could also be a factor.

sounds like you are doing well. :T

i would also love to go organic. but cant afford it and am useless at growing my own. Will keep trying though. :p

Re clothes sizing - I am at least 7 to 10lbs heavier than when I was 20, but I'm in at least a size smaller :( I call it vanity sizing :)

well today i learned something new ... once again i started really craving crabs and was feeling so aggitated with myself for feeling this way ( had a feast and yoghurt to see if they helped... the didnt)

so i started looking into reasons as to why i am craving carbs the way i am ...

it appears that there are several ..
    1) habit ie: you usually eat a biscuit etc whilst watching a t.v show, so when you watch it you suddenly want said biscuit this one didnt apply to me but it is useful to know
    2) you have went too long without eating so your blood sugar has dropped and needs an instant boost to see you through ... now this is deff me i sometimes go hours without eating ... but recently i have been trying to eat every 2.5-3 hours ... today i went 4.5 hours between food ... i think that is what has happened to me today so i will be much more aware of having something to eat more regularly
    3) needing more sleep or dealing with stress .... this is due to a low serotonin levels

i found this interesting and i think it will help me deal with this craving for food i dont even like in the future

    http://trainerconfidential.com/2009/09/04/3-reasons-you-crave-carbohydrates-and-how-to-stop/

here's a link if anyone is interested ...

p.s i found other sites but they all said roughly the same thing this one just in a language i could understand ie: no gobblydegook
