I think (someone correct me if i'm wrong) but a PAC code usually has a life of around 30 days or so

As long as the new line is active, you can use the MAC code as above, up to 30 days.

I would speak to O2 tomorrow and confirm that they will be prepared to accept your old number now that you have started the new phone contract.

Forgive me if I have this wrong but whilst Orange are happy to accept a PAC'd number at any time during a new contract there is something in the back of my mind about some other networks only accepting the PAC at the time of purchasing the new phone.

The 30 day rule simply refers to the period during which the PAC can be used to take the number from the original network and is effectively giving your old network notice that you 'intend' to close the account.

Just to follow up on my own post. After reading a posting in another thread it seems that Vodafone will only accept a ported number withing 72 hours of starting a new contract.

Check out the posts by Kirsty_D in this thread :-

Worth checking that O2 don't have the same policy.

Hi...can anyone tell me how long I need to wait for my pac code from orange. Have called quite a number of times last night/today and have been told different info each time. Really I would like it texted to me, but Orange say I need to wait...various times have been quoted and on a couple of calls they have said that they cannot find my request for pac code!

Does anyone know the legal rules and how long I need to wait? Can I insist they provide me with it within a given time? Feeling totally exasperated with them and if there were any chance that I might have stayed it is dwindling fast!!

I originally had an 18M contract which is long over but it suited me to stay for the free broadband which is impossible to get in my area.
  • they sent it in the post about 2 to 3 days after I asked them for it

They are required to supply it by hard copy within 5 working days. After that just call them and mention the magic word 'OFCOM'. Normally they will then supply it by email quite quickly.
Bear in mind that if you transfer before you are out of contract with Orange they will make you pay up the rest of your contract. So therefore you want to transfer after your contract ends, not before.

Thanks for your reply! Lo and behold...I decided to try again this morning and managed to speak to someone knowledgeable and helpful at Orange! A rarity!! I am convinced! Anyway...he eventually found my original request and gave it to me over the phone!! This, I was assured yesterday was impossible. Just shows it pays to be persistent in ones efforts to find competence :) I did do a search online and found some info that Orange are obliged to provide you with PAC within 2 working days.

Sadly if they had all been as helpful and accurate as this morning's chappie I may have stayed with Orange, even though I get terrible reception at home...

    Thanks!
