Unfairley treated by NEXT PLC

Hi all,

Wanted to share this and see if anyone could give me some advice to where I stand.

I have had a Next account for a long time, and have spent thousands with them. A couple of years ago I started using my next account as a credit building exercise, buying bits and bobs and making sure I payed them every month.

I check my credit report regularly and at the beginning of this year was shocked to see the Next had said I had made a late payment for month November last year. I was sure I hadn't missed, so I checked all my statements, sure enough a payment went out of my account every month. When I phoned them to enquire, and prove I hadn't missed, they told me that Novembers payment was 2 days too early so was included on October's statement. Despite my utter refusal to accept this, they told 'computer says no' and wouldn't budge. I contacted Experian who in turn contacted Next, still they wouldn't budge.

I'm fuming about this, it seems so unfair. And besides they are holding incorrect information about me on my credit report, saying Novembers payment was late, when really it was early. I am been a good customer and being punished!

I am going ring them back, but thought I'd get some views on this and where I stand.

Many thanks in advance.

Before I say anything please answer this - does your October statement show 2 payments and November none?

If so they are right you are wrong.

You claim that you were early - they could say that you wanted to pay extra that month - this does not mean you can forget to pay the next.

If anybody with half a brain looked at the pattern of my payments they would see that November's payment was meant for .. er .. November.

What annoys me is that after asking them to change it they won't. For me its their mistake, I didn't forget to pay anything. I remembered to pay and payed. Their intolerant, blind and stupid system made a mistake and credited it to the wrong statement.

Even after pointing this out they still treat me like a bad customer. Rubbish.

Unfortunately the mistake was yours, you paid too early. It's nothing to do with their 'intolerant blind and stupid' system, there would have been dates on your statements that specified when the payments had to be made by, you failed to read these and paid at the wrong time. If you had actually checked your statements properly you would have noticed that there were 2 payments on the October one, however it seems you didn't look at it thoroughly (or at all), ergo your own fault, no-one else's.

A single payment made up to one month late won't have a huge impact on your credit record, as long as it's in isolation.

I had a similar problem with tesco visa which we always pay in full last year. My daughter was going into hospital for 2 weeks so I checked and paid the balance online before her admission. The following month I was charged interest and when I queried it was for paying to early! They did refund it thankfully.

Sorry if it sounded I was having a go, I wasn't. I appreciate everyone's input and yes I made a mistake by paying early. I am just so frustrated by this.

One late payment may not effect my overall score, but I don't like that information being held about me especially when its not the case. That record says this guy paid late, when I didn't I paid early. NEXT still got their cash and when I ask them to amend the record they tell me to go swivel. Thats why I feel I can't let this go. I may ultimately have to, but it will result in me closing my account.

Again sorry if it sounds as though I'm not grateful of your advice guys. Its not you guys I'm !!!!ed with and you have made me see a little clarity.
  • I can understand your frustration at this, but like others say, they've not really done anything wrong.

What confuses me is - you say you were using it as credit building exercise. So you would spend £100, and pay off £100 kind of thing?

Lots of people do this with credit cards etc (me too) but the key point for me is the sending of the statement - this tells me how much I need to pay, and more importantly when. Because of the interest free period, I time this to clear the balance in full on the last possible day.

I guess what I'm saying is - without your statement, how did you know how much to pay? And if you did have a statement, how could you have made a payment for the previous period?
The above facts belong to everybody; the opinions belong to me; the distinction is yours to draw...

I'm glad you brought that up. I used NEXT's Online Summary, which is kind of an online statement. This tells you when to pay and when the next statement is due (as on the paper statement). This is the confusing part and I believe how this happened. The statement says you need to make your last payment before the last day of the month. Which I always make sure I do. It also states elsewhere that the next Statement starts on the 5th. So there is this 5 day period of limbo which I payed in. ( I payed on the 3rd). I figured if it was after the date the payment had to be made it would be carried forward for the next statement. Not an unreasonable assumption.
