Why should peat be banned? Which did a test on various brands of compost and none of the peat free cames came close to the peat based ones.

Because peat is a finite resource, the peatlands are being destroyed faster than they can be laid down and other things can do the jobs peat does. There's a simple explanation here.

  • Controversial or what, watched the show on tv the other night all about it.

Enviromentalists say it only lays down 2mm a year gardeners & others say its much more than that.

Seems to me that it did not take long for that reclaimed site to start doing its business again.

But whose greater good? Peat is regarded as a renewable resource by the Swedes, who treat it much as they do renewable forests. Globally, it is reckoned that the earth generates around 600 million cu metres of peat a year [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]but man uses only 200 million cu metres.

Meanwhile, reportedly, the greatest threat to UK lowland peat resources isn't horticulture - it's forestry!

As is so often the case, it seems to me that peat has become a cause for vested interests just as great as those who extract peat commercially.
