How many litres of compost do I need for a 12" pot?

Strange shape containers.
At a guess I would say about 8 - 10 litres per container.
Depending on what you are growing, you don't need to fill them all the way down, you can put some bricks or polystyrene at the bottom.0 -
I have 6 x 12" square planters that I need to fill which are also 12" deep.
Can someone please tell me how much compost I would need for each one please?
Ta!

gives you 28 litres.0 -

Let's see. There's 1000 litres in 1 cubic metre. Each pot (assuming 12" cube) is 0.3048*0.3048*0.3048m = 0.028 m3.
Therefore each pot has volume of 28 litres.

Ah, I see, I thought 6" x 12" by 12" deep.
Ok if 12 inch cube container - not such a strange shape now. You'll be looking at 20 litres per container, because they won't be filled to the top, and you can put a couple of bricks or polystyrene blocks in the bottom to bulk it out a little.

Ok folks, thanks for your help.
They have Miracle Gro on offer in Wilkinsons at the minute, 3 x 56l bags for £12 so off to buy some of those.
Does anyone know where I can buy peat on the high street please?
I have tried and can only find peat free composts.0 -
Sorry for confusing you with the size of the pots, here they are.
They are actually 15" from rim to rim but 12" planting area.0 -
Sounds perfect, peat should be banned. You can use some plant food if you think they need it.
I think I may use 2/3 miracle gro compost and 1/3 perlite instead, I'm sure it can't make that much difference.
The square foot mixture is based on someone in America using it and of course it's a lot wetter here so I would imagine I don't need to retain as much water as they would over there.0 -

Not true, I'm afraid. A container in the sun will dry-out almost anywhere - and inside a day in Summer. Regular watering is essential when you're gardening in containers.0 -
