Just a tip for anyone looking - apply for your Electron card well before you want to book your Ryanair flights. I have applied for a Halifax Easycash current account (bog standard account with no frills but has Electron card) and the flights have gone up £50 while i've been waiting for my card to arrive so I can save £20 Argh!

Btw I've noticed all the charges have gone up too, over the past few days - baggage, check in (online & airport), prority boarding & card charges etc.
Hay ho we still use them though because they still beat the other airlines most of the time!

More Ryanair bashing........when will it ever end..............THE most successful airline of modern times...................the saviour of mass air travel....the creator of vast inter-country movements to the benefit of 100,000s of our new EU entrant countries......aren't they doing anything right?

PS Just read the small print.....of your flight contract....its all there.....!!
  • I think this is a great shame.
I have flew with Ryanair to many destinations for short breaks.
The best one being Milan for 2p ( yes, including taxes )

Now it's almost impossible to avoid the add ons.
The one saving grace is the Electron card charge being free but i'm sure that they'll remove this soon,

Maybe it's the end of an era????

I have a job thanks, we dont use computers/printers in an afterschool club and the IT room is locked up. Don't think I would have thought of that otherwise! ;)

My mother in law asks me to book flights and I get my DH to print them off at work, but if he is abroad then I cant do that.
You could always buy a printer for about £15 then you're not dependant on anyone else and can always use it for other things, not just e-tickets.....Go on you know you need one!;)
  • Oh dear, that's all I can say. Had anyone bothered to do any research, this would have been a non-news item. I would guess that at least 80%+ will be unaffected by this.

Is there going to be a news story every time an airline adjusts the fuel surcharge? At least that affects every passenger.

I booked a flight last week and to check in one bag was £30!

Bought is to buy. Brought is to bring.
  • Solution: don't check in a bag.

If you have to check in a bag, you would be better off considering another airline.

The reasons for charges are not only to generate ancillary revenue but to also encourage less profitable customers to fly elsewhere.

    Oh really?
    Stansted to Rome: flight £25 return + bag £30 = £55
Heathrow or Gatwick to Rome (BA): flight £79 return, bag free = £79+

In what way would you be better off considering the other airline?

But promotional fares will be exempt from the new check-in charge. Any advertised 'headline' fare has to available for that price, so if the 1p flights to Bergamo return after the summer, you will definitely be able to do that again.

OK - if you're after pure moneysaving, sure.
For £14, we're talking potential savings on:
transport times - you can get the tube to Heathrow, National express to Stansted is £8 each way, more by train,
a beer and sandwich on the flights (not sure what this would cost on Ryanair - £7 each way?)
you can choose your seat online (impossible on Ryanair, I suppose the nearest equivalent would be prioirty boarding),
plus you can fly into the main airport instead of Ciampino.

Given these prices and this destination, I would fly BA if I was checking in a bag.
I had a similar choice going to Barcelona and needed to check in a bag, I chose BA - it was something like £38 each way. Ryanair didn't workout cheaper after the bus from Girona, and my time has a value on it too. BCN is much easier from the city, and saves you an hour each way.

I'm a big defender of Ryanair but there are some situations where it's not always the cheapest, especially for the big cities, particularly if you are using their other services such as baggage and check-in.
