I think this works best at small hotels and UK hotels. In Spain for example it is normal to get quoted much higher than a tour operator price and some hotels just won't even offer you the option.

I have stayed in 2 Iberostar hotel in last 2 years in Canaries. Each time price was cheapest booking direct through Iberostar website

I often just use alpharooms, then once booked, email the hotel and arange the other little things, or even request a seaview seperately - alwys offering to pay of course, but rarely had to. I think because you offer to pay, it looks like you're being honest, and not trying to take the !!!!.

edit: oh and talking dirct to the hotel, (with regards to city breaks) always ask the hotel to arrange the airport transfer for me. That way you get a nice man with your name ona board waiting for you - and he knows exactly which hotel to take you to without you trying to explain! - recently done this throughout asia and most hotels offered a limo service (usually an S-class merc) for typically £50-£70. Bargain to whisk you to your hotel after a 12hr flight in cool comfort. (singapore was cool - limo driver had one arm, car not adapted for disability, on phone AND pointing out the sights to us whilst driving at breakneck speed - what an experience! -note: missus not impressed however, adn for the purposes of road safety - neither was I ;-) )
