peanut butter, coconut cream, tapioca (I love it made Chinese style with Mango Puree - which also is high cal - and chunks of mango), creamed corn - make chicken sweetcorn soup - I imagine that sweetcorn, being sweet, has a few calories in it...

Poor little thing, I had gladular fever as a teenager and I felt run down for months afterwards- hope she recovers soon. When I had nodules removed from my throat I had to go on a liquid diet- found slimfast the cheapest and most convenient, especially the milk shakes. Found complan quite lumpy and difficult to mix. Drank loads of bovril for Vit B, and effervescent multivits in water. Drank loads of milk and home made 'cream of..' type soups. Dips are usually high in calories, especially the ones with cheese in and hummus.

    Hope she gets better soon.

I agree with the soup ideas, you can get a lot of fat and protein into a good homemade chicken soup! Also won't be cold but you can have luke-warm if hot isn't appealing. I really sympathise with you and your daughter, Toto. My little sister had GF last year (age 12 too) and it did take her a long time to get over as she would over-do it then get ill again. However, she was tested the other day and it is out of her system now, thankfully. Luckily the school was very understanding about it and hopefully yours is too?

Re food - chocolate desserts like those mentioned above will be good for fat and calories but not great for nutrients so if you can give her vitamins (Abidec (SP?) drops are great if she won't swallow pills) as well that'll help her immune system.

A favourite of mine when I was younger (and mother's as a child) was "cheese under the grill". A high calorie/fat delicous comfort food which with soft white bread dipped in should be palatable for your daughter.

In a shallow heatproof dish dice/grate some cheddar and add a knob of butter and some milk. Grill (or you could microwave I expect) until it makes a cheese-soup like consistency. Mix with spoon and eat with bread dunked in. Absolutely gorgeous but of course I daren't these days lol!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your daughter and make sure you get enough rest yourself, looking after sick kids is very tiring!

That sounds yummy, I quite fancy that myself :o Must think of shedding the baby weight though.

You are all stars, I hope you know that. I feel much less useless now I have loads of ideas for things I can do to help her. The poor thing is so miserable.

Complan is the way forward - they give it to those with eating disorders to replace missing calories - its available in tetra pack form so no mixing :D

(I know because my sister had stacks of it in the fridge when she was really ill) - ask the doctor about prescribing some :D

I've just been off work from having a cyst removed from my sinus - gross! I haven't been able to eat normally for a week, but here's what I have been eating...

congee (this is plain boiled rice and is a bit like a soup)
    chicken and sweetcorn soup
    scrambled eggs

rice pudding - no chewing required!
    ice-cream
    jelly
    tapioca with single cream

I would also recommend something like the complan or slimfast milkshakes as they have lots of calories and vitamins.

can she drink full fat horlicks or hot chocolate made with some cream ,
you can buy glucose sweets from the chemist my dh swore by them when he had meningitis ,
  • I'm thinking milk-laden things that are high in fat but still healthy, does she like porridge? Or Ready Brek/Weetabix with hot milk and maybe mashed banana?
Home made rice pudding, custard, instant desserts e.g angel delight, all spring to mind too. Would she manage scrambled egg?

An update for you, things are getting worse and I'm going to take her back to the doctors tomorrow. She is physically sick when she eats anything, even a mouthful of yoghurt today was too much. She is still sipping at fluids which is a good thing, but she's so weak and looks awful. Overnight she has developed sores around her mouth and although this morning she looked a little brighter she's gone downhill this afternoon.

If things get any worse I'm going to take her straight into hospital.
