    Smoothie with coconut milk?

If she likes yogurt try Rachel's Dairy coconut yogurt. It is lush and has full fat yogurt, cream and coconut in -bit pricy though.

Thanks everyone there are some great ideas here. Greenbee, can I borrow you for a few weeks please :) I will nip out and get some stuff in today to make the things you have suggested.

The doctor said not to worry about her weight loss, but it's hard not to. She's 5'2 and now just hitting 6 stone, she's lost a stone and a half in just under 2 weeks and this illness is showing no signs of getting any better. I just think she has to be better able to fight the virus is she has some nutrients and energy in her.

Thanks for all of the well wishes, it's awful seeing your child suffer isn't it.

The protein bars are quite nice - a bit like jaffa cakes.
    Jaffa-cakes - now that's an idea.
Or any jam, marmalade or preserve - really nice in smoothies too.

I imagine sports drinks like lucozade and gatorade would be very high in calories, so perhaps you could give her a few energy drinks alongside her food?

Lucozade Sport is lower in sugar than something like Coke.

However, Lucozade Energy contains a lot of glucose and is higher in calories.

Personally I'd chuck loads of cheese/butter in everything.

For instance, mashed potatoes (which are already a high carbohydrate food) can take a LOT of butter (or olive oil) - in fact top chefs do add vast amounts of butter to mashed potatoes to make them taste nice.

I agree with the soup ideas, you can get a lot of fat and protein into a good homemade chicken soup! Also won't be cold but you can have luke-warm if hot isn't appealing. I really sympathise with you and your daughter, Toto. My little sister had GF last year (age 12 too) and it did take her a long time to get over as she would over-do it then get ill again. However, she was tested the other day and it is out of her system now, thankfully. Luckily the school was very understanding about it and hopefully yours is too?

Re food - chocolate desserts like those mentioned above will be good for fat and calories but not great for nutrients so if you can give her vitamins (Abidec (SP?) drops are great if she won't swallow pills) as well that'll help her immune system.

A favourite of mine when I was younger (and mother's as a child) was "cheese under the grill". A high calorie/fat delicous comfort food which with soft white bread dipped in should be palatable for your daughter.

In a shallow heatproof dish dice/grate some cheddar and add a knob of butter and some milk. Grill (or you could microwave I expect) until it makes a cheese-soup like consistency. Mix with spoon and eat with bread dunked in. Absolutely gorgeous but of course I daren't these days lol!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your daughter and make sure you get enough rest yourself, looking after sick kids is very tiring!

That sounds nice! I'll have to try that sometime. Thanks!

I know the thread's specifically about increasing calories, but in terms of nutrients and so on, Lucozade Sport would be much better than Coke...

Have a look here for ideas from the NHS. Bear in mind that the ideas aren't always tempting for poor appetites, but it provides some basic guidelines.

Also - porridge made with full-cream milk (and cream!), and a little fruit.

Lunch plate - a spoonful of mayonnaise with the avocado etc, slices of tomato

When I say small portions I really do mean small - even a whole strawberry can be a bit much if you're run down, but slice it carefully, make it look pretty on top of a tablespoon of yogurt and she may even come back for more!
