I use diluted distilled vinegar for cleaning almost all surfaces, and some bicarb for those extra hard spots!
My OH used distilled vinegar last weekend to soak his classic car's brake discs, nuts and bolts etc - most of it came out like new after a little scrub and they're 35 years old!!0 -
Hi
Someone mentioned to me that you can use white vinegar to wash clothes and it is supposed to be good at softening clothes. For anyone who uses this, do you add it to the Fabric Conditioner compartment in the washing machine or the Powder/Detergent compartment? How much of it do you use and does it bleach clothes?
Thanks in advance0 -
Hiya
I use a very small amount of washing powder and use the white vinegar in the softener compartment.
I use roughly a couple of tbsp. Been doing it for a few years now and no, it doesn't bleach clothes.
Hope that helps0 -

Thanks. Do you use the vinegar in addition to a small amount of fabric conditioner or use it on it's own?
I have noticed that my clothes seems to be getting stiff and bobble a lot. Our washing machine is only 1.5 years old, so not sure if the detergent is causing this? Does the vinegar leave a slight smell on your clothes?0 -
Hi,
I used it a few times as a softener after reading the tip on here. But I really honestly could not feel the difference and I do live in a hard water area.
I stopped using fabric softener way before MSE was invented as I couldn't tell the difference with that either.
In answer to your question though, if you want to use it, you put it in the fabric softner drawer, it dosn't bleech your clothes and it dosn't smell either.0 -
Use it in place of fabric conditioner.
I've been using this since DD was in cloth nappies, and it really does work. Also, DH tends to suffer from a reaction to "normal" fabric conditioner, but has absolutely no problems with vinegar
And no, you won't smell like a chippy !GC - March 2024 -0 -

I don't use fabric conditioner any more - I used to love the smell of them so very occasionally I will get some if they are on offer. Now that I use the vinegar (and barely any washing powder) my clothes don't have that gorgeous fresh smell if I tumble dry them but they do if they are line dried outside.
Surprisingly there is no smell of vinegar! Apparently vinegar is antibacterial too even at just a 5% concentration so any smells caused by bacteria/sweating etc are eliminated too :T
And... vinegar helps to prevent limescale in the machine :T0 -

Thanks. DS2 has Eczema and I only use half of the recommended dose of laundry detergent and fabric conditioner, but there is no change in his skin. I have used Non-Bio detergents/powder in the past, but it just doesn't clean stains as well as Bio does. Hoping that using vinegar instead of fabric conditioner will help.0 -

It should do as the vinegar removes soap residue...
My DD has eczema when she uses certain products but I can get away with a small amount of Daz washing powder, small amount of soda crystals and the vinegar.0
