Well, cider vinegar works a treat as a hair rinse. It strips out all the nasty buildup of silicones and other product residues and leaves it nice and silky and soft and shiney. I put a rinse of diluted cider vinegar on my (very long) hair once a week, between using the shampoo and conditioner.

So I'me quite prepared to hear it works on towels. It will also fix many loose dyes btw so worth adding to the washing machine for a mixed colour load.

Brilliant! Got some cider vinegar knocking around - going to try this! :T

OK folks, I am doing a wash with a fair amount of vinegar in, mainly to give washer a good clean, but there are some of DS clothes in there too. Will et you know how I get on.

Not a lot - an ounce or two. I just generally tip the bottle in for one glug :D

Thanks for the inspirations guys, I've just put my first wash on using white vinegar instead of fabric softener so I'll report back in a bit! I did chicken out of using straight vinegar so I've put a couple of drops of essential oil in too :D

Since finding the tip on this site, I've been using cheapo malt vinegar in the conditioning drawer - about a tablespoonful or one glug. I use a scoop ( an old coffee measuring scoop) of soda crystals and just one washing tablet. Have been doing this with all my laundry for about a year now and never had any smell left on once the washing was dry. Also now when I use a facecloth for the first time, I no longer need to rinse it out in the basin to get rid of the soap still lurking.

    Farway,

I am about to wash some towels this afternoon and I don't have white vinegar. I do have brown, so if you're joking, I'm not going to be happy, lol!

OK whitewing, I was not joking, and as others have now posted the brown malt is fine, hope it worked for you

Well, my white vinegar wash turned out lovely, I will def be doing it again and trying with the malt darker stuff as this is cheaper. Thanks for inspiration everyone. The washing was dried outside and look and smells fresh and is nice and soft too!

I swear by this now. I always put white vinegar in the drawer and it works wonders in several ways. Firstly it helps shift stains (e.g. sweat, ink, wine, tomatoes), then it keeps the machine clean and stops scale building (vinegar is a natural limescale remover - try it on your sinks too) and last but not least it softens.

Do you put vinegar in the wash powder section as well as the conditioner side? (Thinking about it removing stains)

    Hi all,

I am proud to say I made my first vat of laundry gloop earlier and it has so far- "did what it said on the tin" or whatever people have told me lol! I am hesitant of the white vinegar thing in the washing machine as I am sure that even if things blow on the line that my family will still smell like Harry Ramsdens! I wondered if any of you o/sers made any homemade fabric conditioner that smelled nice and wouldn't ruin my clothes....as although maybe no smell from the vinegar( as I have been told) surely it's acidic and surely that can't be good if you want clothes to last? I really don't want clothes that stand up all crusty and starchy and then make my hair stand on end when i try to put them on!!! Any help would be most appreciated....since I left my job I have managed this month on less than £100.....from £600 think I am doin alright :) Thanks in advance from anyone that can help :)

Definitely give the vinegar a try. You don't have to use much, just a couple of tablespoonfuls. The clothes do smell of vinegar when they come out of the machine but once the clothes are dry they are completely odourless, honest. I think one of the principles at work is that soap and detergents are highly alkaline and the vinegar is acidic, so it dissolves any unrinsed soap away
