    Farway,

I am about to wash some towels this afternoon and I don't have white vinegar. I do have brown, so if you're joking, I'm not going to be happy, lol!

I 'think' its recommended to use the clear vinegar.

I use it at the end rinse on cloth nappies, helps get rid of any pongs and softens them up. TBH I never even though about using it on clothes but might give it a go

Silly question, but is white vinegar the clear stuff, the one that looks like water in a jar and malt is the brown stuff we put on food?

White vinegar is clear i.e. looks like water in the bottle.

I agree with MakeitandMendit - all our washing has had white vinegar in the drawer for the last three years, and it definitely doesn't smell of vinegar at all even when it's just out of the washing machine. It smells deliciously of washing powder, and the drawer of the washing machine is clean and unmildewed, unlike the horrid sight it used to be when I used fabric softener.

Another poster mentioned "the drawer" but which drawer? Mine has two, one for the powder and one for a final conditioner rinse. If put in just, say, the conditioner drawer it can't clean the main drawer at same time, or can it?

Well, cider vinegar works a treat as a hair rinse. It strips out all the nasty buildup of silicones and other product residues and leaves it nice and silky and soft and shiney. I put a rinse of diluted cider vinegar on my (very long) hair once a week, between using the shampoo and conditioner.

So I'me quite prepared to hear it works on towels. It will also fix many loose dyes btw so worth adding to the washing machine for a mixed colour load.

No, it can't clean both at the same time. You'll still have to clean your soap drawer as normal.

Just put a slug of it in your final rinse drawer instead of conditioner.

I also use cheap malt (brown) vinegar unless I'm doing a white wash. It does the same job as the more expensive clear white vinegar.

I've never noticed my washing smelling of vinegar....maybe I use less than others - but it still works!

I use which ever vinegar I can get the cheapest. Havn't found any difference between the malt and the white ones - both do an effective job softening the wash. Wouldn't recommend pickling vinegar though!

silly question time probably like asking how long is a piece of string but how much do you put in.

I do not use fabric conditioner but spend a fortune on tablets for stopping lime scale build up - a very hard water area so think this will help me save money this way
