I am considering cancelling my SKY subscription and cannot seem to find the answer to the following question, so hope someone can help.
"If I cancel SKY, that means I can receive Freeview through the SKY+ box. Does it mean then that I can use the box as a Free view recorder?"
Please help.

You cannot use the recording features without an active Sky subscription.
The Sky+ box will act as a standard digibox allowing you to view the FTA (Free To Air) channels only, if you have no active contract.
Freeview is only available through a televison aerial, and not a satellite dish.0 -
If you cancel and want to record, send your cancellation by letter and state that you want to continue to pay the £10 per month charge for recording "Freesat" programmes.
As stated above, Freesat is not the same channel line-up as Freeview.
See list: http://sam-radford.me.uk/ftv.htm0 -
Thanks for this folks, finally a solution - on the strength of the £10 a month I should really go out and buy the Freeview Recorder and stick with the Freeview line up which has all the necessary programmes.0

You would be wiser to buy a Humax FoxSat-HDR box.
http://whathifi.com/Review/Humax-Foxsat-HDR/ - and - http://www.trustedreviews.com/home-cinema/review/2009/01/15/Humax-Foxsat-HDR-Freesat-PVR/p1
Buy from: http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=HUMA-FOXSAT-HDR-BOX
This, like a Sky+ box, has two tuners and a (320 GB) hard drive: it can do all the things that a Sky+ box can (live pause, chaseback, you name it) but costs you nothing to use. You just unplug the two satellite dish leads from your Sky+ box and plug them into the Humax box. That's all there is to it.
The big bonus is that the Humax box can also receive, record and display free-to-air HD television (such as BBC HD). Which a Sky+ box can't.
So, why pay Sky £120 a year for what you don't need - and for what it can't receive? Ditch Sky completely. :money:

My wife loves her Humax 9200T Freeview PVR. But whatever you buy, try buying from Humax direct for a big discount (and a 12 month guarantee):

That is certainly worth checking - but it's not necessarily the best place to buy one.
I've not seen Humax Direct selling refurb twin-tuner FoxSat-HDRs at all. And if they did, they'd come with only one year's warranty and you'd also have to pay for shipping.
Buying a FoxSat-HDR routinely from Humax Direct would cost £292.64 plus shipping (minimum £5) and it would come with a two-year warranty. Total price £297.64.
Buying one from John Lewis would cost £292, with free shipping. That, too, would come with a two-year warranty, extendable to five years for an additional (non-refundable) £45.
Buying one from Richer Sounds, however, costs £290. You can either purchase it in-shop (so no shipping fee) or have it delivered for a minimum of £7. This comes with a one-year warranty. However, for an additional £29 you can extend the warranty to five years and (best of all) that £29 is refundable in full after the five years, if you claim it promptly.
Hence my recommendation.
(That said, I purchased my own FoxSat-HDR for £310 from my favourite local AV dealer who magically produced one for me last January when none were to be had anywhere else and Richer Sounds had a six-week waiting list! :snow_grin )

Now I'm confused.
I looked at this one:- http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/Product.asp?ProdRef=10041&cat=Factory and it says in the "More info" bit that it only records freeview and not sky or cable.
So will it record the "free to air" BBC1 etc via my Sky dish?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. The box you looked at is for Freeview i.e. it takes it's feed from your normal aerial.
You need to be looking at the Freesat boxes on the website to use your Sky dish.Dave. :wave:0 -
Freesat - needs a Freesat box, uses Sky dish and cabling, is sort of a joint effort between BBC and ITV.
Freesat from Sky - Can be purchased separately, but is what your Sky box will revert to if you cancel your subscription. Note confusingly similar names.
Freeview - This is digital terrestrial (through an aerial) TV. This system is separate from the 2 above, and needs different equipment.
'Free Satellite' is what you can receive if you buy kit out of Maplin or Lidle - motorised dish, loads of channels from satellite that beams over Europe. No nice programme guide or nice features that you'll be used to from Sky+0 -
Just get a Humax PVR-9150T. Up to 100 hours recording, series link and pause/rewind etc. Only £119.95 from Richer Sounds website and a 5 year guarantee for 10% extra ( Humax guarantee it for 2 years anyway). I love mine and would not be without one now. Very cheap option if you already have a digital aerial installed.
