We went to Spain last Xmas for a week - booked when the pound was strong against the euro. By the time we got there, the pound was on a par with the euro. This meant two things: 1) the holiday became 30% more expensive than we had planned and 2) some of the previously 'cheap' items to bring home were actually dearer than in UK. e.g. a bottle of Barcardi at 15 euros was effectively 15 quid.
The thing to do is to avoid the eurozone and the dollarzone. Go to Northern Cyprus. We haven't been but have read that it is similar to Spain 50 years ago. That's good, by the way, not bad!
We're actually going to South Africa. Haven't a clue what we'll find there (apart from lions and elephants and giraffes all over the place.) We don't care what it'll cost, cos we've been planning it and saving for it for 5 years. At last it's arrived and it's our last big trip.
Good luck and bon vacance, as they say somewhere
Hi there, which part of South Africa are you going to?I moved here from Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) in 1980. I went to Borrowdale Primary School.0 -
Thailand is vastly cheaper than the UK for pretty much everything. You can get fried noodles on the street, tastier than you'd get in a UK noodle bar for £6, for about 60p.
I imagine you went to Phuket? It's a giant tourist trap.
We went to Egypt, I've never been anywhere where people are so ruthless about trying to con, cheat and rip you off. Considerably pricier than Thailand.
I found Egypt to be extremely cheap. A taxi was no more than £1 for a 15 min journey and I was having nice 3 course meals with drinks for a fiver. Not sure what you consider cheap. :P
Thailand is peanuts though compared to most places.0 -

We're going to Greece in September, would normally go abroad for a week in late May but it cooincides with half term this year, so we're going in June instead. Looked at Cyprus, then the Isle of Man, have settled on Cornwall and doing our bit to support the British economy.Make £2025 in 2025

Would love to holiday in England but seaside resorts are overcrowded, overpriced and generally not very visitor friendly. Usually go to The Algarve.0

Since we had a larger family we have been camping in Cornwall each year. This summer will be our 8th season!
We stumbled on a campsite 8 years ago and have been back ever since. Despite being very close to Newquay (not our cup of tea at all!) it is a little piece heaven tucked away. 10mins WALK to beach which is clean and NEVER crowded. For the inevitable 'off' day there is plenty to do/see.
I know camping is not everyones idea of fun but with the right kit (doesn't have to cost a fortune) and a sense of humour it's great fun.
Where else can you get a holiday for a family of 5 for two weeks for £300?
We have occasionally suggested to the children that we go abroad and the reply comes back "that would be great but, we will still go to Cornwall as well won't we?"...........No! "In that case we don't want to go abroad!" :T0 -
Some of these polls end up weird...we have
"I sometimes holiday in the UK and will this year."
But what happens to "I sometimes holiday in the UK and won't this year."?
I tend to go abroad some years, UK others - just depends what I fancy...0 -
No holiday for us this year, As we are doing bits and bobs in the house,, so just going to enjoy my time in my house, playing on my laptop/ ds/ reading etc etc0

I have just come back from a week in Spain, where I usually visit at least twice a year to see family. I was horrified at how much more everything cost, even small items like a Macdonalds burger, because of the poor euro exchange rate now. Think very carefully about booking a holiday this year in the euro zone, it will cost about 50% more than last year! I live in the beautiful Suffolk coastal area, we have gorgeous coastline, gardens and forests and providing the weather is OK, there are loads of activities and great pubs with reasonably priced grub. Give it a try! It will definitely be the UK for me from now on.0

We will be going abroad this year, as it will be our honeymoon so we want to go somewhere special. We would have no qualms about holidaying here though and if we can afford to we often take a second holiday in the uk for a long weekend. However this is really expensive so we won't this year as the honeymoon will cost more than our "normal" holiday.
We are going to the USA, I know that the pound is not as strong against the dollar as it was but it is similar to the exchange rate last time I went and we still found it to be cheap. Accomodation, eating out and buying petrol in the USA aren't as expensive as here even when the exchange rate isn't in our favour.
We decided to avoid europe last year though because we had planned to travel to Italy which tends to be fairly expensive so without the favourable exchange rate of previous years it looked less attractive. We went to Egypt instead and it was dead cheap once you got out of the hotels.0
