Would you holiday in the UK? poll discussion

We always take one foreign holiday and one UK holiday a year but there's nowhere to vote for that, so had to vote C.0

We usually have a couple of holidays abroad and maybe a weekend or two here or abroad, last year we had a week in Egypt and a longer holiday in Thailand. We thought Thailand was expensive for eating out etc although some things were cheaper than UK, we also had a weekend in Zurich which worked out cheaper than we were expecting. We haven't booked anything yet for this year but I fancy a long weekend in the lakes or dales at Easter and we are considering a cruise in the autumn/winter. I have no problem with holidaying in the UK but I think hotels are extortionate, I travel a lot for work, and I am often appalled at the cost and level of service I find here. The cost of a cottage in high season is also ridiculous.0

Thailand is vastly cheaper than the UK for pretty much everything. You can get fried noodles on the street, tastier than you'd get in a UK noodle bar for £6, for about 60p.
I imagine you went to Phuket? It's a giant tourist trap.
We went to Egypt, I've never been anywhere where people are so ruthless about trying to con, cheat and rip you off. Considerably pricier than Thailand.0 -
We went to Turkey last year, try eating out in the resorts - it is as expensive as here, or more expensive in some cases.
We went to a 5* FB Turkish resort, the drinks were Mayfair prices, but if you want cheap I guess you don't stay in a resort in the middle of nowhere.
The Caribbean is great for cheap drinks, alcohol is very cheap there. Turkey and Egypt are both pretty horrendous because they are Muslim countries and so tax levels are high.0 -
There isn't an option for " been saving for years for a special holiday which is being taken this year"0

Always holiday in the UK (although have in years past done Belgium, Holland and Spain). Through choice now go Scotland, Cumbria, North Yorkshire moors, East Coast of Yorkshire and Northumberland. Beautiful places and great to holiday there.0

Holiday every year in Spain (as my mum lives there). Despite no accommodation costs we are finding it increasingly more expensive year on year so no longer the extremely cheap holiday it once was. We also find that being confined to school holidays it is very hot during July and August making husband and kids uncomfortable and tetchy. We had family discussion and decided we would go camping in Cornwall this year as it is a more action/fun based holiday that all of us enjoy. We have previously gone camping as well as having a holiday abroad but finances won't stretch that far any more.0

Have short breaks in the UK - but have relatives in Spain so visit - it's cheap thanks to free accommodation!.. Have a daughter in the US so have to/want to visit her - free accommodation again.
You can make really cheap UK holidays with shrewd booking of Travelodge and take a lot of your own food - and now the petrol prices are back down it's do-able for most people. If only we had the weather........:rolleyes:0 -
Not sure what I am as I am planning to go to Ireland in the Summer.
So, you are effectively holidaying in the eurozone. BEWARE, because similar to Spain, Ireland has traditionally been cheaper to holiday in than the UK. We went to Spain last Xmas for a week - booked when the pound was strong against the euro. By the time we got there, the pound was on a par with the euro. This meant two things: 1) the holiday became 30% more expensive than we had planned and 2) some of the previously 'cheap' items to bring home were actually dearer than in UK. e.g. a bottle of Barcardi at 15 euros was effectively 15 quid.
The thing to do is to avoid the eurozone and the dollarzone. Go to Northern Cyprus. We haven't been but have read that it is similar to Spain 50 years ago. That's good, by the way, not bad!
We're actually going to South Africa. Haven't a clue what we'll find there (apart from lions and elephants and giraffes all over the place.) We don't care what it'll cost, cos we've been planning it and saving for it for 5 years. At last it's arrived and it's our last big trip.
Good luck and bon vacance, as they say somewhere0 -
I'm in the B catagory. Thats probably because I've not been out of the uk, dont have a passport and couldnt afford it anyway lol.
There are so many pretty places in the uk i'd like to visit before I contemplate going abroad.0
