Handing back my work laptop

Quick question would appreciate your help or thoughts.

I am leaving my company on not the best possible terms, as a consquence I have to hand back my work laptop.

Question is, format the disks? or just hand it back?

A previous employee handed his laptop back encypted :p

A collegue I spoke to about this said he was not bothered if I formatted the drives, as most if not all of the information was already on the company network.

I could backup the drives to my external disk just in case??

Thanks

If you have been doing something dodgy on it then i'm not sure but assuming you haven't then I would say just copy any private files you need, delete the originals and then hand it back as is!

I'm sorry to hear you have to leave your company and job.

If there is anything private stored on the laptop then that should be copied onto your own personal media, such as CD-RW or USB Flash Drive, and then erased (not deleted, erased) from the laptop hard drive. The difference between erasing and deleting is erasing removes all traces of the file from the laptop hard drive, where as deleting just removes the index to the file. Download Eraser to do this for you: http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/

Once you have done that you should be fine. Anything on the company network will probably be removed once you have left - system administrators in large companoes usually keep up with removing accounts to keep the network tidy.

    I hope this helps :)
  • I did a low level format of the disk and then re-ibstaled the OS when that happened to me.

Losing your job can be a great thing once you get over it !

    Best of Luck !

    Isn't that a misnomer?

As far as I am aware, there is nothing 'dodgy' on the laptop, just family pictures, mp3s and videos the normal stuff ;)

Just want to ensure that there is absolutly nothing left that could be used against me, in case I appeal the decision.

Just been careful. Would prefer to hand back a clean laptop but wonder if thats considered 'correct'??

    Thanks again.

Possibly - yes - it would appear to be the industry used misnomer though as detailed in your linked article !

Once you've erased all your personal data make sure the laptop is fully charged. Then take a tube of superglue and glue the battery in nice and secure. Then squirt the rest of the tube into the power adapter plug. If you have any glue left you can always 'modify' the latch so it will be a sod to open. I'm sure they'll see the funny side !
Or you could pull the keyboard keys off and re-arrange them making naughty words.

Don't you think the company could use it against Suggs in an appeal complaint???
