Oh my crikey my Tom cat is a girl!!!

Well don't i feel daft!sent Hubby off to the vets with Tom in tow booked in to be erm snipped. He texts me to say "tom's a girl!!!". Well that was a bit of a shocker!!!

He/she is our 5th cat (not all at once) and behaves just like all the other boys and even started weeing in places to just like the others did when they were "ready" for the snip. Just shows you can't judge a book by it's cover eh!

Anyway i now have a very woozy little Tom (can't seem to think of him as a girl yet). I hadn't realised a female spay was a full hysterectomy with a 10 day period inside. All my boys have been bouncing by that eve and off out again.

My question is a daft one really, after the recovery period should i be doing anything different with regards to care of a female rather than a male??

Same thing happened to me, I had a Red Tabby so assumed it was male & didn't bother to look, I knew you could get female ones but thought they weren't common (They've very common!). Anyway s/he too went off to be Castrated @ 6 months & I found out he was a she! You wouldn't know anyway by behaviour there's no difference so don't worry you're not the only one! (Was never told to keep mine in for 10 days, just 48hrs after anaesthetic so maybe there's a reason in your case?)

didn't like to poke about too much for OOOOOO's!as a kitten h/she had been to the vet for an eye infection (before we got him/her) so presumed the vet was right about him/her being a boy!
H/she is taking it all in her/his stride think I'm more confused by the whole thing and can't get my head around it!S/he is a marmalade ginger cat and is now called tom-boy!!!

thinking back though i did wonder why my older (def) boy cat didn't try and get his leg over!He has tried to hump all the other boys he's met in the past!!!always knew which way he swung so to speak just thought he didn't like gingers!!(i can say this as i am of the auburn variety myself!) turn's out he doesn't like girls!!!:rotfl:

My cat has taken to peeing in places to mark territory and shes a girl, as soon as the student loan comes through she is off to the vets.......then she can do it outside like my other two boys.

I had the same experience though, when I was 10 I got a kitten and it was sexed by my Mum and declared a girl (bearing in mind she worked for the CPL for years and knew about cats), we popped "her" off to the vets for injections and it turned out she was a he......

Also we had a cat who was a bit of both, I kid you not. Outwardly he had all the right boy bits but also had girl bits inside....most bizzare. He/she didn't seem to mind, far as I know he lived a long and happy life (he "adopted" the neighbours and refused point blank to come back)

Recovery shouldn't be much different for a castrate or spay. It is surprisingly common for people to get the sex of a cat (or rabbit) muddled up and it gives us a bit of a chuckle. The ones that really make me laugh are the adult male hamsters that come in for the newly appeared two swellings at the back end. You just have to be very polite and explain the anatomy!
