Tortilla Press - anyone got one?

http://www.casamexico.co.uk/products/detail.php?category=61&product_id=931

Since I went to visit my dd in Mexico, I've hankered after a tortilla press. I have been making my own for a couple of years now and I was wondering if they really do make the whole process easier or not.

We saw an old lady using a rather heavy duty affair in an outdoor market and I was rather taken with the idea.

I'd be pleased to receive any words of wisdom on the subject.

I'm sure I've seen these on ebay for about a tenner.

The O/S in my says just roll as thin as possible with a large rolling pin and use the largest cookie cutter you can find. An up turned plate, flan dish, removable base from a cake tin could also help.

If you can stand the dull video you could make a press

Thanks, I saw that vid if it's the one on youtube and yes, dull it certainly is.

I usually roll the tortillas, but doing them is a 2 person job, one rolling and the other griddling. DS is quite obliging with this, but it takes time!

I've heard that plastic presses are a no-no

What does the press do? I'm intrigued, not that I make tortillas but I have the flour in the cupboard so one day...

It just flattens the ball of dough into a round, even, flat tortilla shape... much quicker than rolling.

The bit that got me was when he starts going on about how bad he is with cling film.

Don't worry about getting a perfect circled tortilla by hand rolling. I even try to get them a bit oval shaped myself as it makes them 'longer' and by the time you 'roll' them into burritos you can't tell what shape they were in the first place. ;)

I make the dough, some say to leave it for half an hour before dividing, but I don't usually bother. Cut into pieces 50-60g, roll out, griddling, each takes about a minute to cook.

We have a system where ds does the griddling and I roll out. I can usually keep up with the rolling during the cooking of the previous one. Very cheap to do!

I'm still hoping that someone around has got one of these presses or has used one.
