I'm confused. Did you attend the practice for an aftercare wearing the same lens type that you have done so for the past 5 years or have you been refitted with a different type of contact lens?

    Hi!

Not sure where you get your lenses from, but I get mine from Specsavers & all contact lens checks are free & I'm also allowed unlimited check-ups should something be wrong with my eyes, I used to have daily disposables, then moved to day & nights (where you sleep in them) for £22/month, but recently changed back to daily disposables and get 20 pairs/month for £15.

I've been wearing contact lenses for nearly 15 years now, always using Specsavers. I'm well aware that as they are franchises not all Specsavers opticians are as good as they should be, but as there are loads around I looked around until I found one I was confident in (I think that goes with any optician whether they are in a chain or not).

Over the years I have had times where I have had to phone up my optician because of eye infections etc and think that paying literally a couple of £ more than somewhere like this http://www.contactlenses.co.uk/wearingmode3.html means that should anything happen I can get treatment straight away, also I know that my prescription is correct and that the lenses I am wearing are fitting me correctly.

By all means buy your lenses whereever you want, but sometimes being MSE isn't always the best thing.

Anyway that's my 2p worth.

    So what?

Why should we pay more for something just because it keeps a small business in operation?

Britain is no longer a nation of shopkeepers!

Yes indeed. Just as soon as they have invented a magic device that allows the cheap online e-tailers to remotely early diagnose a brain tumour from an eye test, and be cheaper than the evil rip-off small businessman in his shop, I will be right with you.

Until then, I will be happy to pay the bit extra to get that personal touch; the idea that the person in the optician I am dealing with might, say know me? Or know my eye history? Or actually bother to do the extra checking.....?

Jeez, it ain't always about the money. You must have a fun life buying the cheapest possible example of everything.

Quite right, we're rapidly becoming a nation of un-employed.

doing a quick google I've found that she is obliged to provide me with a specification once fitting is complete.

Ivory - I've paid her handsomely for the lens fitting - why should i have to pay her over the odds for my lenses as well??? It would be cheaper for me to pay her for the fitting, get a new fitting at ASDAs and then get lenses from there. But its the principle of the thing - if I've already paid for a fitting then I should be entitled to a copy of the prescription?

Have you checked Asda will sell you lenses without a fitting with them?
Costco wouldn't with us, when we tried to use our specsavers presciption.

    to clarify.

I've worn lenses in the past - since I was about 18, up until a couple of years ago. My optician had previously fitted my lenses - but because it has been over a year since I've worn lenses she said I'd need to be refitted.

I've paid for the contact lens fitting.

I've sent the complaint letter - so we'll see what happens.

re putting opticians out of business etc etc - I don't doubt the importance of regular eye checks, have been haing yearly checks for almost 20 years. What I do object to is my optician refusing to give me a copy of my specification which I have paid her for, because she wants me to buy my lenses from her rather than somewhere where I can get them for less than 1/3 of the cost.

I've recently had a contact lens fitting. Optician was about to order me a supply of lenses - when I told them that I could get the lenses cheaper elsewhere so could she give me a copy of my prescription. She said no - that she's got a responsibility to look after my eyes and she can't do that if someone else is dispensing? Is she allowed to do this? Going with my optician will cost almost double. She also said that she doubted I'd get the same lenses - but I was planning on buying via ASDAs - so surely should be reputable?
Dont know what the rules and regulations are regarding this but have bought my lenses online for years at a fraction of the cost. If they wont give you the prescription I would just buy one pair of lenses from your opticians. The packet they come in usually has the prescription printed on them. From thereon you can just order online. There are lots of places where you wont be able to buy without a prescription or letter from your optician but can give you name of website where you will be able to;. Hope this helps

So if you haven't worn lenses for ages, surely the Optician would want to follow you up a few months later to ensure they are not causing any adverse reaction before issuing the specification for which she is responsible for. It sounds petty, but that it how it should be done. Believe me, I'm sure she would far rather get shot of you after one appointment rather than waste another appointment following you up, knowing full well that you will be going elsewhere.

What would you have done if you were in her shoes? Money is not the issue here, it is dotting the i's, crossing the t's and protecting ones back legally.
