Help sister pregnant at 43

Options
I know the law is different in Northern Irelnd than that of england and rest of uk so i am posting here.( also I post regularly so have used a new name )
I have spent a terrible week end with my younger sister who at 43 has found herself pregnant again.she is around 8 weeks gone and is in a terrible state. She has 4 children and her hubby is threatening to leave again if she has the baby. she says she cant cope and does not want to have the baby . she cant get an apt with her doctor until next week. I am scared to leaver her side as she says she may do something stupid....she has taken an overdose before and ended up in Hosp etc and nearly had her youngest taken off her only we all rallied round her. I am at my wite end as to what to do
can anyone advise me what aher options are as i will have to go the doctors with her...? ?

Her husband sounds like a wonderful guy!

I copied this from the FPA site, they might be better placed to give impartial advice than a GP, who can vary a great deal in how they will help. I think some GPs in NI can still opt out of prescribing contraceptives because of their religious beliefs.

I hope you get some help
  • Oh how stressful for you all,i really hope you can get the help you need for her asap.
Just a thought but i would phone the GP surgery and demand an emergency appointment at least they could perhaps help sort her mind out-i do recall something about two doctors are needed here to make the decission and if its a matter of mental health and she will harm herself as a result of having to continue with the pregnancy then it would go in her favour.
Please make sure she gets the help she needs for herself after its all over aswell, sounds like her man isnt exactly supportive.
    good luck.

What a sad story. I don't have any solutions I'm afraid but just wanted to wish you and your sister well and hope things work out for the best.
  • Thank you . I have my granddaughter today and we were out for a while shopping etc.....I will read over the above responses and see if we can help her. i know from talking to her today she is adamant she is not having this baby.....OH GOD.........i meant to add that she has a history of mental health problems and has had depression for many years.....but in the last 6 months i have seen a change in her and her intake of tabs has been reduced...i just wauldnt like to see this tip her over the edge......but this is a life her at stake....though not for me or anyone to judge......

FPA are definitely the people to talk to - they're non-judgmental and will help her find a way to do the right thing for her.

    What a nightmare!
  • Thanks for those who have pm'd me with advice. I am going round to hers in the morning and will ring the Fpa ? will they see us or does she need referred there from her doctor. I have given her a sleeping tab and she is settled for the night so .....hopefully i can get a good nights sleep too without worrying about her.
    Thanks for your support

Reading between the lines on the fpa site you ring and make an appointment yourself to see them. Fingers crossed you don't have to wait too long.

Good luck and take care - sounds like she's lucky to have such a great sister btw. :grouphug:
