bathroom door, paint bubbling and peeling?!?

i bought my house about a month ago and noticed the inside of the bathroom door had peeled away, so i sanded it down smooth and painted it in gloss. now a week later its bubbling and starting to peel again? whats causing this?

is this door damp? didnt feel it. its for a bathroom with no window, but has a extractor fan.

will i need to buy a new door?

  • It may be the wrong paint underneath.

Did you use a wood primer? And did you use an undercoat? Some glosses are self-undercoating, but you will ALWAYS need a primer on a timber door. The paint is coming off due to moisture in the door escaping and reacting with the gloss. Even if there is no sign of dampness on the door, it will contain moisture. Even kiln dired timber cointains about 20% moisture...

the door was previously painted in satin paint i belive, all other doors in the house are the same and were repainted over with gloss, there all fine. its just this bathroom door.
damp= do i need a special undercoat 1st then paint gloss? btw its dulux once gloss im using (wood and metal)

You get the best and most reliable finish by using the following combination:

    1st coat: Wood Primer
    2nd cost: Undercoat
    3rd coat: gloss/satin paint

You still need to use a primer with the dulux once gloss and any other "one coat" applications. I always thought someone would have a problem with products like these, as the name infers that you don't need any other treatment with them...

decided to get a dehumidifier, just bought the Delonghi DEM10 Dehumidifier as i have noticed paint bubbling elsewhere in small patch. got the dehumidifier cheap, lots of places sold out of the model i got but managed to find a company. it comes this thursday so hopefully it will be the solution

It's nothing to do with the dampness in the bathroom, or ANYWHERE else in the house. The dampness is in the door, it always will be and no amount of drying/dehumidifing will change that. If you were to take all the dampness out of the door, it would warp. Did you actually read my posts? ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS USE A WOOD PRIMER BEFORE GLOSSING AND THAT WILL RETAIN THE MOISTURE IN THE DOOR - WHERE IT SHOULD BE!!!!!

Why ask for advice if you aren't going to follow it?

i have taken ur advise and will be doing it, but its not just the bathroom door, its on the stirs bannister too, (all other doors are perfectly fine within the property). my bathroom doesnt have a window so when we move in properly, having baths and showers will increase moisture in the air. also smells abit damp as it hasnt been lived in since september

I cant say for certain if its damp related or not, but reading your post, I get the impression you have applied gloss straight on the existing gloss, and this will cause it to peel and bubble anyway.

You have sanded it down smooth, but not back to the bare wood?, so there is still paint on it, if this is the case, then you need to re-undercoat, then you gloss on top, you dont need primer, primer is for bare wood.
