Hi there, can anyone help me with any advice re my 2nd car insurance quote. I have a R-reg with full.comp insurance with 3 yrs no claims and with my partner as named driver who is only provisional license holder for a price of £220. Now i bought a 2nd car of 53 reg, i was shopping around for insurance thye are qouting around £500 with same policy as above for both of us. can any one tell me why such a huge diffrence, they are also saying that i cannot use my no-claims on my 2nd car. Is this true and what is the best way to proceed?

is the 53 reg car as an addition to the R-reg or is it a replacement
If it's a replacement then you can transfer the policy from one car to another
If its an additional car then you can only have the existing NCB on the first car, you would have to build up from scratch again on a second car
A 53 car will be a lot more expensive than an R-reg (assuming they are similar types of car), so hence your premiums are going to be a lot more. Is it the same make/model? Obviously if the R-reg is a little car and the 53 is a bigger car then the insurance would be more because of the size of the car as well
If you are keeping both cars then I would consider transferring the policy (including NCB) to the newer car and maybe taking your partner off this policy
You could then insure the older car separately (with no NCB) but could consider taking out third party fire & theft insurance only which would be cheaper (assuming the R reg isn't worth that much?)Indecision is the key to flexibility

The R-reg is nissan almera and 53 reg is renault clio, iam selling the r-reg but untill then i think i have to have insurance on both or by taking the fully comp.insurance on clio only can i still drive nissan as 3rd party only but with out insurance. Actually i bought clio for my partner and she will drive after passing the test, untill then i will be the main driver and she will be named driver. I can teach her as well untill then. This is my idea dont know what you think, any other better ideas are welcome. Thanksis the 53 reg car as an addition to the R-reg or is it a replacement

First things first....
You CANNOT drive any car 3rd party only if that vehicle does not have insurance on it. That means that however you insure the cars, both must have an active policy on them.
As for which way around would be cheaper, and on which car the NCD should be used.........well i'm afraid only an hour or two doing comparisons is going to answer that one.
How old is your partner - look at the option of her being a policyholder as she can still earn NCD whilst she's on a provisional. Could also be worth looking into the option of a multicar policy, but not sure how well they quote with a provisional licence holder on the policy.
Hope this helpsTop Tip is £450 away from clearing the overdraft and being debt free0 -

So you can drive 3rd party only on any vehicle - even if its not insured by it's owner..........are you sure?Top Tip is £450 away from clearing the overdraft and being debt free0 -
It depends on the Insurer, some include in the Policy Wording that the other vehicle you are driving must be insured and some don' insist on it. (So check your policy or ring the Insurers)
If you do drive it under the driving other cars part and the other vehicle is not insured then it will come up on the Police's computer as being uninsured so there is a good chance they will stop you and they will often impound it until you take the Insurance Certificate in to prove you are covered. (The police will not normally refund the impounding charges)0 -
If the OP owns both vehicles then the DOC extension isn't relevant.0

My policy states that I and my partner are insured to drive ANY car that we are NOT the registered keeper/owner of. Think the OP should recheck that insurance policy. It would be better to change the insurance on the car your selling and transfer the NCB to the new car.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

The Driving Other Cars extension is only valid if the other car is insured by someone. It dosent matter who it is as long as you have permission to drive the car. This is what I was taught when working for a Car Insurance company.0
