Tesco and 6 deals per customer!!

I went to my local store at about 2.30p.m. and there was a lot of reduced fruit and veg. I met a lady who often shops for bargains and she had 5 packs of grapes at 30p and a couple of mushroom packs at 30p. She often shops with her mother and because her Mum had not arrived she told me she had picked up some extra for her Mum. I said well if you dont want it you can always put it back . I then got some grapes for myself ( the last pack) and some veg for tea. As she walked away one of the sales assistant's came over and started searching her trolley and said you cannot have all of these as you have to leave some for others!! She was quite rude to the lady ( who is disabled and has just come out of hospital after 3 months having had a broken elbow they cant fix) and so I told her that she had no right to search the ladies trolley and surely it was 1st come 1st served!!!She said someone had compained about her taking all the grapes and that they had a policy of only 6 deals per customer. I said that may be so but there was no need to be so rude to thelady.
I continued with my shopping and the SA found me a few moments later and said that she wanted to speak to me . She said she had spoken to the lady in question who was fine and not at all upset. She said she did not like being accused of being rude and that lady and a few others persistntly took all the bargains and left none for others. I said that if there was this 6 only policy and it applied to reduced items then they should have a sign saying this on the reduced section. She said they had done that and it had made no difference and that this ladiy and a few others were causing a problem. I said regardless of that she should not have been so aggressive towards the customer. In the end I just left it as the SA knows me well and I dont want to be her target next time. However I think I made my point and if I see it happen again I shall ask to see the manager.
I try to get bargains when I see them but there is a fine line between buying what you need and buying for the sake of it. I told my mother and she said that maybe the lady with the bargains has little in her life and she enjoys getting a bargain. I think she maybe right. What would have other people done in this situation??

I would have complained about this person. Waste and reductions are a big part of my job and I'd be really glad that someone is willing to buy the stuff that we reduce. Yes there are times when some people take advantage, (although 5 packs of grapes isn't really taking advantage) but there are ways to be polite and thoughtfully ask for the lady to share.0

tbh 5 packs of grapes isnt that much. we have 5 people in our family and we go throught fruit like crazy!
i think you did the right thing and the sa looking into the lady's trolley is pretty rude.
i think it depends on her eating habits and diets. who knows, maybe the lady is a very healthy person and eats more than her 5 a day and likes eating lots of mushrooms.
and i reckon that sa was quite rude to you and the lady.0 -
I think you are being unfair. For some people being bossy because of their job is the only pleasure they get in life. And when you have the ability to get people banned from Tesco if they argue back it makes your job all the more fun.
I'm sure the SA in Tesco was only doing what a lot of Tesco staff do - especially on some of the customer services desks. You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0 -

Are you being sarcastic or am I just tired??0 -
Sorry Rose - I thought my sarcasm was more obvious than that! Are you being sarcastic
Tesco staff love being rude to people, particularly if they think MSE is involved. See many years worth or previous posts from lots of forum members regarding Tesco little Hitlers. You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0 -
Disgraceful behaviour. I really hope that you got her name and will report her to her store manager.0

It does sound as though the SA was less than tactful, but TBH I wish they had this policy in our local Tesco as it often turns into a bit of a scrum and some customers are very greedy and take piles of stuff leaving others with nothing.
It is often the same people too, I recognise them and get quite annoyed, but hey, life's to short to bicker over it. I can imagine the staff feeling the need to intervene and make it fairer. They must recognise the frequent "offenders" and perhaps some more timid bargain hunter had complained about the lady in question.(Yes, you will have deduced from my comments that I keep an eye out for reductions, but I wouldn't take more than my share if other people clearly wanted some too.)
If there was a proper rule then maybe some people wouldn't be so rude.
I agree with the OP that there should be a sign or something.0 -
Was in Waitrose yesterday at about 4pm. They had started doing the second round of reductions. A lady came up to the guy with a trolley full of goods which had been reduced earlier but then asked him to apply the final reductions to her goods. I think this is wrong, if you put it in your trolley then you get it at the price marked. She obviously was hanging around waiting for the items to be reduced further and instead of taking her chances like the rest of us she packed her trolley. The young guy doing the reductions did reduce evertyhing in her trolley for her. Whilst he was sorting her out the goods he was about to reduce further sat on the shelf.
I would not mind if it was just one or two items but a full trolley.Sorry for hijacking your thread OP.0 -
Horrible. Which Tesco store is it? As we assume T read MSE they should know.
I've never heard of such a thing. I stopped going to Dover because a syndicate of 4 wipe out the reduced to clear then divvi up the spoils later.0 -
Several Tescos have signs up at cs desk stating what they class as "bulk buy policy" and a lot state 6 of the same product... if it is legal or not I don't know.... perhaps if Constantine reads this he may advise accordingly.Bit of a Florida Fan :j
