My letterbox came off in postmans hand, who should pay?

OK, the letterbox flap is connected with two plastic connecting pins. If either of these pins was broken the flap would have simply fallen off. Both of the connecting pins have snapped in identical places on each side. The only way both of the connecting pins could have snapped in exactly the same place is for the flap to have been opened wider than 147 degrees.
Where do you get this 147 degrees from....surely you haven't been measuring your letterbox with a protractor? I'm with the other posters on this, just get yourself off to B&Q, Wilkinsons, Wickes etc and get a new flap. If it was only connected with 2 plastic pins then I wouldn't imagine it was designed to last for ever anyway.0 -

No doubt you will now be getting your mail last in your area.

The 147 degrees comes from here (http://www.bits4doors.com/letterbox5.php).
Re: the plastic is bound to break easily comment, there are over 100 new houses on my estate all with the same letterbox as mine, if mine has broken due to it being plastic why are the other 99+ still all ok?
Have you conducted a survey of all of them?0 -
Would you force a visitor to pay for a new gate if they opened it and it came off?0

Yes, there is a possibility that that postman broke the letterbox. But there's also the possibility that someone else broke it before hand (maybe someone dropping leaflets) and tried to cover it up, or, as most people seem to agree, that it was faulty. There are simply too many possibilities for you to turn around and say "it was the postman I know it I want a new letterbox".
Also, your thread title is misleading.
The first and second paragraph seem to contradict each other.
In response to the first paragraph, I was going to make the point that lots of people use letterboxes:
paperboys (maybe)
people delivering leaflets
people delivering charity bags
and of course, posties
OP
Why did you edit your original post?
Why didn't you just add to the end?
Glad you've seen sense though.0
