I own a 1997 E-class and while the rust is terrible, at 223,000 miles the engine is a peach, the suspension is fine, the gearbox is still working perfectly, and I have negligible electronic problems (a failing heater valve if you must know). The interior is totally (I mean that) rattle and squeak-free, and the engine is almost inaudible at anything up to 80mph. This on a 12 year old car that's gone the equivalent of almost nine times around the world.
Even in their worst period, they still built quality cars. I've been around most nooks and crannies on my car and the attention to detail is far superior than others that I've owned.
ahah, you speak about quality and then start talking about VW. Classic.
To the OP, I'm considering an ML, but the 270 is a little bit slow for me, so I'm looking at the 320CDi. Not this year though. Stay away from the dealer network for anything other than parts and bodywork warranties, and use MB specialists for servicing. Look at the UK based MB forums, there are lots of recommendations. Labour is typically about £50 an hour at an indie, and parts are nowhere near as expensive as you might think.
Hi
can you please recommend some UK forums?

The ML mercs are a very poor cars, the reliability is iffy at best. The new model is much better, i know the earlier cars are built in the states not sure about the new models. The newer mercs have came right down in quality and the rusting is shocking. Previous poster is boasting about still going strong at 223,000 miles so it well should be. My last Nissan Patrol was just run in at 220,000, when i sold it it had done 360,000 and still running perfect with NO rust.0

Sorry but this simply is not true, unless you count more than five years old as being 'newer'. New Mercs are galvanised.0 -
Yes your right i was classing the newer mercs as anything newer than 10 years. I guess they had to do something about the rust issue.0

The reason why Mercs will do 200,000 miles is cos the engine doesnt have to work as hard when it doesnt have complete body pannels to move around...0
