Im actually concerned that if the hard drive WASNT smashed with a hammer then anyone dodgy could possibly retrieve all passwords off it!
Can you clarify what happened to it?

I too have the technical ability of a wombat (hurrah for AlienRik & everyone else on this forum  )

But I may be able to help you with the home finance thing try either GnuCash or Money Manager Ex they may suit your needs.

If you want something a bit more technical you could try VT Transaction cashbook although this is aimed at businesses to use you may be able to alter account names to get it to suit your needs.

GNUCash is a free program for managing your money not sure how good it is as never used it. Might be worth a look.

I'd never recommend a hammer as an AV could be expensive solution.

    EDIT: beaten to it again!
  • Husband just come in and I have shown him this thread. Modem has actually not had the hammer taken to it YET, so if anybody can help in the simplest of terms to make it better then we would love to try to repair it as we have nothing to loose.

Computer switches on and runs XP but unable to connect to internet. Internet supplier ran a test and said everything was fine and to prove it we are running this lapton on the same internet connection.

Any help will be gratefully received, thank you.

Bootup the computer and keep pressing F8 until the SAFE MODE SELECTION SCREEN pops up
    Select SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING

When the desktop loads in try the net
    IF it works then ~

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD NOW')
    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
    UPDATE and FULL SCAN
Post the log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
    REBOOT
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

If it DOESNT work then id say the easiest thing to do is put any programs we might need onto the computer that DOES work and put onto disc or usb stick or whatever

Hang on, earlier you said you had smashed the computer, now you say you are thinking of smashing the modem? Your modem cannot have a virus, only your hard drive! Please put the hammer down for now and follow Rick's advice.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

As soon as you boot up, keep tapping F8 until windows comes up with a black screen with white writing on it, use the arrow keys to select "safe mode with networking", and press enter.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.
