I have just found this forum but alas it was too late to help us find a solution to the Malware Defender virus that has just crippled our computer.
We have decided to wait awhile before buying a new one and to use our laptop, which although we have had for a while has hardly been used.
We used to use Quicken to keep our finances up todate but wondered if there was anything better we should get as we will have to buy a new one? It will only be for home finances so we do not need anythig to complicated as we are not computer literate.
Thank you for any advice you might be able to offer

What happens when you turn the computer on? Can you log on?0

Why do you need to buy a new PC because of spyware? As RIK advises, there is lots of help available on this board to help you get your system clean again.
The very worst case is that you need to do a clean reinstall of Windows which will remove any viruses or spyware for you.No free lunch, and no free laptop

I am afraid it is too late for the computer, we have taken a hammer to it!
When we got infected we got in touch with Webroot Spywear which we pay for yearly, who are based in Colorado and they tried for 4 days by sending emails and my husband following their instructions untill eventually we gave up as it was so stressful. Plus the 7 hour time delay did not help.
In the meantime we are just going to use our laptop to give us thinking time before we decide what computer to buy.
I did say we were not computer savvy and after trying to read a few of these posts, that is a definate!!!0 -

A hammer! Isn't that a bit like putting your car in the crusher because it has a puncture? No free lunch, and no free laptop

PS: What anti-virus do you have installed on your laptop? If it is the same thing (Webroot), I strongly suggest you ditch it and install something decent like Avira (free) or Kaspersky (paid). Otherwise you may be reaching for your hammer again sooner than you expect...A hammer! Isn't that a bit like putting your car in the crusher because it has a puncture?

I am afraid to say that yes it is Webroot but when my husband comes in I will show him what has been said.
We got the Quicken disc from someone, installed it on the now defunct computer, returned it to them and they have since passed away so.....
Re the hammer, we thought it would be unrepairable so we thought it best to do a hatchet job on it. As I said I have only just found this forum.0 -

replacing webroot will be easy
I think best thing for you though is to use KASPERSKY as it does everything all in one (Have to pay for it, but it will be WAY better/safer than relying on webroot)
As for repairing ~ most computers can be repaired so long as the instructions are followed (And we'll try and go as basic as possible if need be)

Quicken is no longer made in a UK edition. You could find a secondhand one on eBay quite easily though. Or buy the US edn if you don't mind having dollar symbols where there should be pounds, everything else is the same.
Assuming that your new machine is running Vista, the old edn would probably not have worked on it anyway.
Any virus is repairable, it just involves 'cleaning' the software. No hammer is required. If you meant that you just smashed the hard drive (which is what I hope you mean) , then this can be easily replaced and the operating system reinstalled. then it will be as good as new,No free lunch, and no free laptop

RIK, what's your success rate on removing viruses with a hammer?
I sense a gap in the market here, something like...
'Get Hammer, the new antivirus tool from Screwfix!
The only way to kill all viruses stone dead-100% effectiveness guaranteed!'No free lunch, and no free laptop
