    they are not allowed to give a cash refund on a card transaction.

    It's up to them, there's no law, just some company's policies.

    Shops discretion. I've taken things back and before i got my card out they have said not to worry we will give you the cash back.
    Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

    I had this on an Electron card refund

    With Electron they gave cash back instead
    The assistant couldn't tell me why but that it was only Electron cards

    I know within Tesco when we issue a VAT receipt the VAT amount is always lower when paying by Card than when paying by cash. Also Customer Service staff have the discretion to refund up to £10 by cash when you have paid by card.
