But it is now owned by the government (i.e the taxpayer), as the Irish Government bought it back last year.

Not only do they charge you for something that the Irish Taxpayers own, but they also increased the price by more then 25%, as the cost previously included VAT, but not anymore. Before it was something like 1.6 without VAT and now it is 2.00 Euro without VAT.

Do think they should offer an option to pay in £ sterling for this.

Well worth the money to avoid driving through Dublin!

They do take sterling... well the one on the main Belfast-Dublin road does anyway. £1= €1 and they give you change in cents.

Yes, you're reading it the wrong way. The issue is not just about the M50 or a N.Ireland/Republic issue, it's a British Isles/Europe wide problem.

shouldn't our car tax be sufficient?

Its not a British Isles/ Europe thing, Isn't this the same as the congestion charge in London, tolls on the motorways of France.

Bottom line is it is a benefit you are paying for.

the benefit is the speedier route your taking

Last time I was through I paid in sterling and they had the "euro only" sign up. Had to go to a teller though.
