hi tigermatt, I'm using the Relist Item option
Oh right, I've never used that feature before but I'm guessing because you're relisting it, the options and settings from the previous listing will be copied over? It's only a guess though - hopefully someone else will be able to correct me :)

theres a cracking site about this where the scammers get scammed by the site owner its good fun. He set a firm up called Anus laptops to bait them.

He sent one a knackered old washing machine washing supposedly as a box of lap tops, but the scammer had to pay for collection cost him a few grand

As scammers as often new users there's always the block users on feedback score which I think is a little unfair because everyone was new to eBay with 0 feedback once!
You can only block users with negative feedback so new users aren't affected.

Ah yes, didn't see this. Thanks :)

There's a load of new options that have been added since I last looked that are probably going to be very useful to stop these scammers.

Just go to My eBay, Preferences, Buyer Requirements and you can set up the various requirements for yourself.

    They are:

    Block
Buyers in countries to which I don't ship,
Buyers with a negative feedback score,
    Buyers with Unpaid Item strikes,
Buyers who may bid on several of my items and not pay for them,
    Buyers without a PayPal account,
Buyers with no credit card on file
A few of the above also have another check box and drop-down field that allows you to only have it applied to users with X (5, 4, 3, 2, 1 or 0 and lower) amount of feedback and lower.

When I've sold anything that may be attractive to scammers, I've always put the following note at the bottom of the item description - may have just been lucky, but never had a problem.

To pre-empt anyone thinking of enquiring, I will only post to the UK and I only accept Paypal. Thank you.

I expect that I'll get scammed next week, now. ;)
I only exist in my own mind - if you can see, hear or read me, you are a product of my imagination.

Re: Tigermatt's posting above, you can also set those Buyer Requirements when you list the item, although the link's easy to miss. I think from memory it's near the Returns Policy bit.
  • Hi
I've sold quite a few phones on Ebay and this problem seems to be getting more and more widespread.

From personal experience, this is my advice:

    1) NEVER put a 'buy it now' option on your phone listing

    2) Always state very clearly that ALL bidders with less than 5 feedback should email you first with a british landline telephone numberor or they will be cancelled. Don't trust the seemingly innocent usernames (eg emily1234 etc) because the scammers know english names and how to use them). And make sure you ring the telephone numbers to check on anyone that does.

    3) Use the blocking preferences as people have described above. They aren't foolproof but you might as well use them.

    4) ALWAYS set the auction to end at a time when you can be sat at your computer watching the last minute bids. Cancel ALL bidders with less than 5 feedback (or people with more than 5 but from ages ago - you can see this in the userID history). As soon as you cancel a bid, bring the list back up again because the scammers often work in teams trying to win the auction in the last seconds.

I know this may seem mean to the genuine new Ebayers who want to buy a phone. But to be honest, as a new Ebayer i wasn't bidding for expensive items - i wanted to check out how reliable the system was first. So in my mind, anybody bidding a few hundred pounds for their first Ebay acution is BOUND to be a scammer. Take every step you can to protect yourself.

Cheers for this info guys, I've listed the phone and set some filters up so only certain peeps can bid and I'm going to add a 3 bid sentence as someone has already bidded!
