DVD to PSP conversion, legal issues help?

Hi there,
I have been an ebay user for over two years, and have over 250 100% positive feedback. I am also into movies and PSP, and was looking on ebay today and saw that a lot of people are selling lost, the simpsons and 24 etc, on dvds in mp4 format ready to be played on the psp.
These guys seem to be making good money and their auctions all have something like " in bidding on this item you agree that you own the original dvd, as do i, and that you are paying only for the conversion service". there is also blurbs about tv shows being in the public domain and so can be transferred to another medium. The show i thought to convert and sell has all been aired on british tv, and i own both original dvds.
Basically, i just wanted some advice as to whether this is all kosher? I do convert videos for my own psp, so this seems like a way to make a bit of cash. I am just a little worried about the legality, as i don't want to screw up my 100% feedback. I checked one guy selling converted videos who has 30 feedbacks, all 100% positive, and none of his auction seem to have been closed.
Any help on this matter would be great, cheers.

Copying a DVD in the UK, even for backup is illegal.and that you are paying only for the conversion service". there is also blurbs about tv shows being in the public domain and so can be transferred to another medium.
Nope, the shows aren't in public domain. You are not allowed to sell TV programs that you have recorded of the TV. As I understand it, you are allowed to record them for yourself, so long as you watch them within a reasonable period of time (in truth, I think they only take action if you try to sell the tapes on)Basically, i just wanted some advice as to whether this is all kosher? Like I say, it's illegal. Whether it's still worth the risk is up to you to decide.0 -
Thats kind of what i thought, although I have read official PSP magazines with guides in on how to copy movies etc to your PSP, and they said basically, if you don't own it, don't copy it.
Not really sure if its worth the risk though. Cheers for the reply.0 -
Although that was an amercian magazine. Just googled and indeed, backing up a DVD, even if you own the original, is illegal in the UK.
So, if you put a CD you own onto your ipod, or a DVD you own onto your PSP, you're breaking the law should go to jail! GOd I love the UK...slash.0 -

Yeah, in the US it's slightly different because there it is legal to make a backup copy. However this has been confused by a new law that came in a few years ago that makes it illegal to circumvent any copy protection measures used on CDs/DVDs, etc.
Unfortunately, a lot of people think it is the same here. So, if you put a CD you own onto your ipod, or a DVD you own onto your PSP, you're breaking the law should go to jail! GOd I love the UK...slash.

I wonder how it works as Sony released the "image convertor" software via their website even though they charge you for the download of the software. Is this software only to be used for non copyrighted items as surely some would think that Sony are endorsing the fact that people can copy films and convert them to their PSP via the software that Sony released?
The Sony connect website has some film files and trailers that can be downloaded to the PSP but cannot remember the website address0 -
Yeah I tried that Sony image convertor and a few more besides, the best one I used is Psp movie convertor.0

Poppycat - PSP Video 9 is by far the best PSP video conversion software, you can get it from

From what i remember before I sold my PSP all you need to do is convert the files that you want then make sure you have the following directories on your PSP i.e. MUSIC, MOVIES, ETC and then drag and drop into the relevant folder and it should work0

Thanks nightwing I already tried that on I just found the other one better as I like to get it to a decent size about 300mb for a 1 1/2 flick.0
