Hotels in New York

  • I was there exactly 2 years ago. Snow had fallen the week before but the roads were all clear when we got there. It was VERY cold. Worst thing is as you are in and out of shops/buildings you kept having to adapt your clothing for different temperatures.
    It was still great!

I'll look forward to your report when you get back, the position of the hotel interests me, but the mention of bedbugs in trip advisor rather put me off although I must admit I did not read a report with them mentioned!!!!!

As long as we have a clean bed, towels and our own bathroom, do not fancy tripping down the passages at 3am to have a pee..... we will be fine. Its a place to sleep......

We do have a fairly slim budget though, I would love to stay in an upmarket place but my pennies will not go that far.........the air fares will be paid for in part by airmiles saved from my Tesco vouchers. the rest of the trip will be funded from boot sales and e bay sales........it is going to take a while to save up.

By the way anyone know what the weather is like end of jan beginning of feb, I guess its quite cold?????!!!!!

The weather is pretty much the same as here. The cheapest hotels are across the Hudson in Jersey city. Check out the 'fortnight in the big apple' thread on this page between my post and mclarens we found some decent places. Your not 'out of the action' in Jersey city its only a mile away and to give perspective central park is 2 miles long.

WE stayed at the Millford Plaza, First class and central. And (CLEAN)
  • Went last year and booked rooms, saw the review on trip advisor, then went 'Oh my god!!...'

Emailed the hotel for re-assurance... got a nice reply back. Got there, nice and central, functional and comfortable, well priced, but its obviously not the Hilton!! Apparently complaining at the desk does wonders......
You might even got one of the Penn 500 rooms (the best and most recently upgraded rooms.).

Its great for access to the subway with Penn station across from it.

If I ever go to NY again that's one of the hotels i'd consider. I also like the sound of the Belvedere , it gets good reviews on Tripadvisor , anyone stayed there?

We stayed at the New Yorker which was fine , nothing great , but ok for a base.
Same old same old since 2008

  • I am off to nyc at easter my first trip and booked this hotel after reading the reviews on tripadvisor. Anyone stayed there and got any comments?

I have adjusted my comments on hotel Pennsylvania,as i dont want to scare anyone. However,it all depends what you want, also in a very large hotel like this, that needs refurbishing, some rooms ie 7th floor can be tatty, some ie 13 or 14th floor are fine.As for the comment by someone about false reports by other hotel owners, yes ive heard this mooted before on tripadviser, however i have to say many of the negative comments I personally found to be true, the positives are the great location in midtown right opposite the subway and near to times square, felt safe in all that area, and great shopping 7th avenue.Re the bedbugs,i had read that afterwards, and somewhere think i read it came from a newspaper article ( searchCNN) about two women who sued the hotel. This is a budget hotel, yet photos of it dont give that impression, cos of the imposing building-one of new yorks biggest i think, and the plush looking foyer.

We stayed there in February and when we had arrived there was snow everywhere, but 2 days later the sun was shining and it was really quite warm.
