Clippers for my Cocker - which ones?

Hi, after several cheap sets, I am going to invest in some good clippers for my dog. My latest set landed on the floor this morning and have cracked and are beyond repair.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of particular brands either good or bad?
Also, I have noticed that the professional clippers don't come with guides.
How to you adjust the height of the cut with these?

I know they'll cost a bit but don't mind as I'm still quids in compared to using a groomer and I know how I like him cut.

Thanks in advance.;)

Why do you want to clip a Cocker?

He's not clipped all over, just his back and head etc. He still has his feathers. and doesn't looked 'shaved' at all.
He hates being groomed so regularly stripping him was a nightmare.
That, coupled with the fact he's a bit of an action dog so constant washing and drying is also an issue and he seems far happier with a shorter coat.;)

We use Moser Max 45 clippers at work but a good set of Oster A5 clippers would be good as well. Don't get the cordless type, They don't seem to be anywhere near as good. Ours get a good deal of use for about £100 to £120. Get some clipper spray to keep them clean and we use a company called Shear Ease to sharpen the blades. They use standard clipper blades and you get get guards in a variety of sizes to fit for just a few pounds. We have 1/2" and 3/4" at work although we don't usually do grooming.

Moser or osters are good for home use. The Andis 2 speed are nice and quiet if you have a particularly nervous dog.

I dont know how you clip cockers but I found the Furminator brilliant for my dogs who I dont like having hand stripped too often. Have a google for it and see if it is suitable. You can watch videos of it in use.

Try Technogroom for clippers. They will give you best advice on which clippers to buy for your particular needs and also do a repair service if ever you needed it. http://www.technogroom.co.uk

With ESS he doesn't get groomed too much. I try and keep his ears brushed and mat free. Around his back legs is a nightmare (he hates it) and they don't get done as often as they should and I normally have to resort to a pair of scissors.

Thinning scissors and a coat king should be enough for the ESS, thats all I used in the past. My cocker is clipped all over now because he has allergies and a short coat is the only way we can keep his skin treated :(

There are a couple of ESS's at our agility club, there's a huge difference in the thickness an texture of the coat. They look quite manageable compared to our Cocker.;)

Am looking at The Moser/Andis, are comb attachments available do you know? The length of the blade doesn't appear to be variable.

    Go to https://www.cockersonline.co.uk

Go to the forums and look in the grooming section there, michelle has done some great "how to's" with diagrams and theres a whole load of info on the best clippers and what size baldes required

My lads cost is also very very woolly since his "snip" - Thats when I stopped hand stripping him and we went to the coat king and thinners, but now hes away to the groomers every three months to be clipped very very close. Unfortunately he now looks like a shorn lamb then a cocker but it keeps his skin condition under control so rather be fit and healthy then looking the show dog he is and be in discomfort
